Satisfactory cast cattle trade against a national falling trade. Meat getting away well in all sale and feeders a strong trade as buyers take advantage of reduced trade to put cattle inside for sale in the New Year.

PRIME SHEEP (3,116 Head)
No repeat of last weeks’ mammoth show, and with numbers tightening the trade held nicely from last week. Suffolk and Continental lambs were good to sell, around 5p/kg dearer on the week, nice export weights selling at 180p to 190p, or £30 to £35 over the weight, commercial end around 170p to 175p. The good heavies 44kg to 48kg generally £35 to £40 over the weight, commercial sorts £30 over. The smart end saw several pens at 220p to 240p, or 38kgs making £86 to £93. The Mule Wethers similar to last week, £23 to £26 over the weight.
A tidy show of ewes were dearer on the week.

REARING CALVES to £440 (B&W av £81.84 Native av £177 and Cont av £303.88) Overall av £158
92 Calves forward for the weekly sale and with plenty of buyers in attendance trade was good with strong averages right through the report. With over half the calves B&W the trade was a touch lighter with the calves possibly not quite as strong but still realised an average of £81.84 and topping at £190. A well fleshed Friesian calf could easily push £100 and beyond with pure Friesians going further. Some quality Blue calves were well sought after with Richard Spence of Low Jackfield topping the trade at £440 with a 1 ½ mth old Blue out of a Pure Friesian Cow. Dairy Sale next week with a good ringside of buyers expected once again.
