Prime Cattle (under 30 mos)

Countrystyle Meats of Lancaster made a return to the ringside and got amongst the top end cattle accounting for the two leading priced heifers from RT&J Critchley&Sons of Hutton both Limousin crosses weighing 545kg and 550kg which made 266.5p/kg (£1452) and 264.5p/kg (£1455). Countrystyle also added the leading priced steer to a quality pen, this time a 545kg Limousin cross consigned by CD&RF Kitching of Threshfield which made 262.5p/kg or £1431.

The top gross went to Phoenix Grain Co Ltd of Preston selling a 595kg Limousin cross to James Robertshaw on behalf of Keelham Farm Shop of Skipton for £1538 or 258.5p/kg. Last week saw a declining trade as the week progressed due to a reduction in retail sales caused in part by customers reverting to eating out early in the week. Trade set off a shade easier but with more retailers at the ringside than for a few weeks the price for the top end closed very similar to last week particularly for farm assured entries.

Once again cattle got spread evenly round the ring with 9 buyers in attendance.

Cull Cow Prices

Dairy culls have been a shade easier over the last couple of sales and this week followed in similar vein. Amongst the Holsteins 120p was a barrier and it took a New Zealand Friesian to make 127.5p whilst other dairy breeds carrying more shape continued to make 130p or over. Lean dairies were still a good trade if they had some improvement left with most just short of 110p. A handful of beef cows with the top a Limousin cross at £1174 or 149.5p/kg

3,303 Prime Sheep comprising 2,870 Spring Lambs, 433 Cast Ewes & Rams

A harder day today in the sheep yard with lamb trade a bit lacklustre for the commercial types and handy weights of which there was a greater proportion, but the heavies and mediums were still generally a decent trade. Some lambs just being shown a shade short on their backs now, and for the first time this season we have seen some resistance from the buyers for the slightly leaner commercial types.
At the top end of the show it was local producers JJ Beckwith & Sons from Holme House, Gargrave that took lead honours at 339p or £146 per head for 43kg Continental crosses selling to Brayton Farm Shop in Selby. WH Marsden from Crossgates, Leeds was next at £138 selling to Anthony Swales of Knavesmire Butchers in York.
P Crabtree & Son from Clifton, Otley made £135 and £130 per head of Continentals with both pens selling to Brayton Farmshop, whilst Messrs Swales secured another lot at £133 when purchasing 45kg Continentals from FW&JM Eddington of Bell Busk.
WH Marsden sold further pens at £129 to Keelham Farmshop in Skipton, and £126 & £123 to Robertshaws Farmshop in Thornton, Bradford.
Hill Bred Lambs topped £107 for 54kg Mules from E&KM Marshall, Summerbridge when secured by local specialist catering wholesaler Swaledale Foods from Skipton.

Ewes got away nicely on the week with plenty coming forward, the biggest and best ewes sold just as well as recent weeks up to £129.50 from W&M Bland for a Cont Tup followed by £126.50 for a Tup from DW&CJ Towler. Best ewes in short supply many more could have been sold to sellers advantage. Heaviest £110+ with some just under depending on conformation. Meated Continentals £80-£90 with some others at smaller weights below that mark. Grazing continentals £60-£70 with some worse sorts less. Best Mules either side of £85 Leaner meat in the £70’s and Plain ewes in the 40-60 mark all depending on the goods. Swales similar on the week with some best heavier sorts in the £50’s to top at £56.50 other good meat swales but not as big in the mid £40’s to early £50’s and plain ewes in the £20’s-£30’s.
