Prime Cattle (under 30 mos)

George Cropper from Baxenden was amongst the high prices securing the top price overall at 254.5p, or £1488, a 585kg Limousin cross heifer bought from Mesrs CD&RF Kitching of Threshfield and the top price per kg steer a 550kg British Blue cross at 245.5p or £1350 from RT&J Critchley&Sons of Hutton. Robertshaws Farm Shop put together an exceptional pen of 4 cattle for their Thornton shop including the second top gross a 590kg LImousin cross heifer from CD&RF Kitching which made £1435 or 243.5p/kg.

Barkers Yorkshire Butchers who supply high quality meat and cutting from their Skipton plant also got in on the act with 3 purchases including the top gross steer a 600kg British Blue cross from Mesrs Kitching at £1419 or 236.5p/kg.

Cull Cow Prices

A light show of cast cattle due to adverse weather and a scarcity of cattle carrying finish. Only a couple of cows at the better end of the dairies which were into the late teens per kg and the plain cattle were very well sold.

Prime Sheep

The weather had no effect on the entry today with 3595 lambs forward for sale and a sharp trade ensued with prices very similar on the week and an overall selling average of 243p/kg across the board.
Heavy Lambs were keenly contested, best end £130 to £145, topping at £160 or 320p/kg for a 50kg Texels from Hayley Baines selling to Anthony Swales for his butchers shop in York, who also bought a pen of 50kg at £150 from the same vendor. EP&JM Hutchinson made £156 and £147 of 48kg Beltex, this time to Hartshead Meat Co. John Midgley of Luddendenfoot made £156 of 56kg Beltex. RL&AR Phillips topped at £145 with 53kg Beltex.
Joanne Andrew from Easingwold topped the sale at 357p with 47kg Beltex’s making £157 per head purchased by Vivers Scotlamb. Hayley Baines made 351.2p on two occasions selling 41kg Beltex both times making £144. John Midgley made 347p with 34kg Beltex at £118. A total of 39 pens of lambs sold for in excess of 300p/kg and 54 pens made £130 or more.

Handyweight sheep were a very similar trade on the week, 240p to 270p a regular price range for commercial and nice skinned lowland bred lambs.
Hill bred lambs were a decent trade again, better end of Mule and Masham 225p to 235p and to £120 per head, Swale/Dalesbred either side of 200p, Scotch Blackfaced 220p/230p topping at 232p form Bob Stubbs, Cheshire, whilst good Cheviots sold to 292p from Tony Kiernan, Preston.

Cull Ewes average £106.42

Ewes were an unbelievable trade today, recording an overall selling average of £106.42 per head, strong Texel cross ewes in the £130’s and £140’s tops at £147.50 from FC Wade & Son of Otley. Best Mules from £115 to a top of £130.50 from JC Crabtree & Son, Bolton Abbey, the same home selling horned ewes to £76.50. Strong rams in the £130’s and £140’s.

Another tidy early season entry of sheep and lambs finding a solid local buyer base and prices for twins form £200 to £260, RJ Umpleby topping with twins at £260 £240 £230 and £220. J Hitchen Luddendenfoot at £250 and £240. Singles from £140 to £160. Rearing Calves to £350 (65)

Calves dearer as the sale went on as some buyers found it hard to get in on time with slow traffic, but they were met with a cracking show on offer with mainly local farmers looking to buy a few for the sheds. Blue sold well, with best bulls keenly sought, and heifers £240/£260 regualr away. Lim Bulls regularly either side of £300 and heifers £250/£280, angus heofers £140/£180 and Bulls slightly dearer.

Craven Dairy Auction

11 Dairy

A great show of dairies today and a very level trade throughout. Judging today was in the hands of Alan Middleton of Bolton Abbey, and he awarded the championship to regular supporter Robin Jennings of South Stainley. This commercial heifer, calved 8 days giving 32 litres sold away at £1980. HS Petch & Son of Middlesborough took second prize on the day with their Pedigree heifer, calved 9 days, on 32 litres it topped the sale at £2450, with another form the same home at £1950. First time vendor John Thompson of Bishop Auckland sold a couple of nice heifers at £1880 and £1800, with £1880 matched by a heifer from HJ &KL Blackwell & Son of Gargrave.
