Prime Cattle (under 30 mos)

Short on numbers today and a near full complement of buyers with both top priced steer and heifer bought by Stanforths Butchers of Skipton and both fed at Grisedale Farm, Threshfield by Mesrs CD&RF Kitching. The heifer was a 600 kg British Blue at £1461 or 243.5p/kg and the Steer a Limousin cross which weighed 585kg and made £1447 or 247.5p/kg. In the lower weights Paul Ellison of Cullingworth bought the highest priced steer (p/kg) a Limousin cross weighing 505kg from F&B Smith of Westhouse at 259.5p/kg or £1310 whilst at the same price of 259.5p/kg George Cropper bought a 550kg Limousin cross heifer from CE &RF Kitching for a gross of £1427 for Sandersons Butchers of Baxanden.

Cull Cow Prices

A few more cows forward which brought a handful of plain lightweight cows brought the average back a touch but no let up in the trade which is strong. Heavy dairies are where the margin has build up compared to the early part of the spring with these cattle now 125p+.

3245 Prime Sheep comprising 177 Spring Lamb, 2401 Prime Hoggs, 93 Mature Hoggs & 574 Cast Ewes & Rams

 

New Season Lamb numbers on the sharp increase today countrywide and much the same here with 177 head forward for sale including several lots of first crossed lambs from Mule Ewes. The nice lambs 39kg to 44kg were in good demand, generally making 260p to 280p (39kg to 42kg at £105 to £112), topping at 287p (39kg £112) from Robert Moran, Nappa purchased by Hartshead Meat Co, Mossley. David Hall Coniston Cold made next highest at 284p, also purchased by Hartshead Meat Co. The heavier New Season lambs were generally £110 plus topping at £125 for 52’s from AJ Slater Goosnargh and £120 for 52’s from J&F Nutter Hurst Green. Overall average 241p.

Prime Hoggs were a good show for numbers, but a very varied show for quality compared to recent week. A shortage of the quality handyweights saw a top price of 255p from DN&D Capstick Bolton by Bowland with 45kg Beltex at £115 purchased by Hartshead Meat Co. Others at 251p from RJ Bailes, Boroughbridge selling to Yorkshire Halal Meat, and 251p from WA,VJ&JA Towler Grindleton to West Scottish Lamb. Other better pens on the day in the 240’s. Handyweight hoggs were short of requirements with 38kg to 43kg Lowland breeds nicely finished making 220p to 235p, commercial types 220p to 220p. Horned and Mule lambs handyweight were also good to sell, nice sorts top side of 200p, commercial types 180p to 190p. Heavy Hoggs again forward in large numbers, 46kg to 54kg lowland breeds selling well, nice types either side of £2, commercial sorts 190p, whilst the very heavy sorts around 60kg sold for £100 to £105, odd nice lots £110 to £115.

Cull Ewes A large show of ewes were a solid trade topping at £119.50 from JGE Heseltine & Son Bolton Abbey and £115.50 KG Stapleton Skipton. Overall selling average of £63 for 574 head.

Rearing Calves to £445 (42)

A very buoyant trade this morning with the full show of calves being beef sired. All beef breeds found a high gear today with 19 British Blue bulls averaging £408.18 topping with a tremendous calf from Fred and Mike Longster of Fellbeck  at £445 with 4 others from the same home over £400, with Sowray’s, Bishop Thornton 2nd in line with their bull realising £440. Heifers were on song aswell, with more fresh faces ringside the 13 British Blue heifers sailed to average of £345 with Fred Houseman of Church Farm Enterprises topping at £420 and £410 for the best heifers in the market.

 

Simmentals hit £400 with a 4 ½ week old bull from Joss Lancaster of Horton in craven, a couple of cracking blondes presented by the Whittaker family of Bolton Abbey which sold for £395 and £350 respectively for a bull and a heifer. Native calves were in short supply but sold to £290 for a strong calf from Shaun Sowray and heifers to £170 from Wellocks, Eshton.

827 Breeding Sheep (comprising 309 Sheep with 518 Lambs at foot)

 

Another good entry of breeding sheep forward for sale, and like last week, a good mixture of young sheep with lambs and older sheep. Best of the Mule Hoggs with Singles came from Robert Johnson Felliscliffe selling at £180 the outfit, cloely followed by Messrs Gratton Warsill with two pens at £175 and one at £170. Ian Townson Settle also making £170 twice. Other decent types in the £160’s and some farming types £130-£140. Best of the Continental Shearlings were two pens of homebred Texels with twin Beltex Lambs from Simon Bennett Silsden Moor. These outfits ideal for inclusion in a flock being Enzo and Toxo, Hep P. Both pens sold for £270 per outfit with another at £230. Peter Simpson Dacre was also in the mix with a pen of 8 Texel Shearlings and Twins making £240 and another pen at £230. Best Young Mules saw David Coates Coniston Cold with 2 shears and twins at £230 and £215. The nice correct ewes with twins were £170 to £190, Singles £110 to £120 with better singles £140 plus, Andrew Throup Silsden selling Texel with singles at £145, Messrs Kayley Halton West Texels with singles at £145, Robert Riley Flasby Texels with Singles at £160.

Craven Dairy Auction (14 head)

 

 

 What a great day in the dairy ring. Sally Wellock of Oakworth hits £2300 twice.

A healthy show of dairy stock in the main ring today with a nice show of newly calven cattle tied up in the shippon. 1st prize in the pre sale show went to a cracking heifer from Peter Baul of Bishop Thornton, by Bossman and giving 32 litres she went on to sell for £1950 to Eric Marshall of Dacre. The reserve champion heifer from Sally Wellock of Oakworth found many admirers, giving 30 litres and by Picardus she went on to sell for £2300 to John Howard of Heslaker, 2 lots later she produced the goods again with a tremendous 2nd Calver giving 42 litres selling for the same price of £2300 this time to Aubrey Greenhalgh. The last cow from Wellock’s then found a home at £1980 with the Hartley family of Beamsley.

 

A 100% clearance on the Pedigree Bulls this afternoon with Brian and Judith Moorhouse taking the honours in the pre-sale show with Aireburn Harlequin. A December born, lineman son out of Aireburn’s prolific honey family and boasting 12 gens of VG or EX which sold for 2100gns to Malcolm Gratton of Warsill. However it was the 2nd prize bull Aireburn Alderman which topped the bulls at 2400gns, by mogul and 11 generations of VG or EX behind him found many followers around the ring with the final bid coming from Robert Metcalfe from Brearton. Section average of £1806.
