2,657 SHEEP comprising 19 NEW SEASON LAMBS, 2426 OLD SEASON LAMBS and 212 CAST SHEEP

Today was the opening day of our new Lingfield sale ring and there was a great show of sheep for a bank holiday Monday and another very sharp trade to go with it when Spring Lambs levelled at 289.86p/kg and Old Season Lambs levelled at 250.37p/kg (+9p on the week). The day started with the charity sale of a single Mule Wether Lamb, it had previously been champion at the Addingham Sheep Breeders Show in December and had been away on feed in readiness for today’s sale. In keeping with tradition, the first animal in a new sale ring is sold for charity, and so following spirited bidding, £155 was paid by Mr Andrew Atkinson for the lamb in aid of Manorlands Hospice in Oxenhope.
There were 19 Spring Lambs forward, handy weights were all over £3 kilo, topping at 342p/kg for 40kg Charollais from Charles Marwood of Whenby purchased onbehalf of Roland Agar (Wholesale Butchers) of Ilkley. Top price per head was £150 for Charollais cross Beltex’s from JD&V Towers of Farleton selling to Kendalls Farmers Butchers of Pateley Bridge and Harrogate.
In the Old Season Lamb section there were 2426 head sold to a stronger trade on the week and some great runs of lambs were forward on the day. RL&AR Phillips of Burton Leonard presented another fantastic consignment of Beltex crosses which topped at 361p and £159 per head for 44kg sold to Vivers Scotlamb, others at 348p 347p 342p 339p 337p 332p 327p 322p and the run of 74 averaging 312p or £130 per head. Messrs Hutchinson of Faceby sold their usual run of well fed hoggs topping at 334p or £154 to Hartshead Meats Mossley and 328p. Rob Bailes from Aldborough had a great run of Continental bred hoggs, the best of which reached 331.8p/kg or £146 for 44kg selling to Vivers Scotlamb. There was a good long list of smart hoggs over £3 kilo, details of which are in the report further down. In the lump there were some tremendous prices, Messrs Phillips £159 £152 £146, EP&JM Hutchinson £154 £148 £147x2 £145 £144, first time vendor J Cawkwell from Goole had a pen of 7 at £152 and a pen of 11 at £149 and Rob Bailes made £146 and £144. Heavy Lowland Hoggs were great to sall all day, with one run of 33 lambs averaging 56kg and £145 per head and another run of 55 lambs averaging 47kg levelling at £140.75 per head. Handy weight continental cross sorts were a nice trade as well, with 240p to 275p regular away for first cross nice skinned lambs, one consignment of 217 Texel and Charollais crosses from halfbred ewes averaging 45kg 260.9p £118.42. Mule lambs were dearer on the week generally 225p to 235p, topping at £124 and £118 from Steve Dorey, who also sold Mashams at £118. Horned lambs easily upkept last weeks rates, whilst meated lightweights would be dearer.
