2,885 Prime & Cast Sheep

Sheep trade was very similar on the week. A huge line up of buyers were present for lambs, representing nearly every type of end user from retail butcher, wholesalers, ethnic trade, exporters and large throughput processors. The quality on offer was rather more mixed, with 60% of the entry being lowland lambs and 40% Mule, Masham and horned lambs, so an average of 186p looks a fair result on the day.

The monthly lamb show was kindly judged by Mr Jim Holden, Livestock buyer for Woodhead Bros of Colne. His choice of champion pen was a pen of 5 Beltex crosses from Martin Brown of Bedale, weighing 42kg they sold for £125 each to Vivers Scotlamb, Annan.

There were nice runs of Beltex and three quarter bred Texel lambs in today, Paul Simpson selling 6 pens over £100 per head and John Eddleston had 3 pens, Richard Ireland 2 pens, Jim Baines 4 pens, D Poulter and Harry Raw both with 1 pen over £100.

Hill lambs were decent to sell and generally along similar lines to last week. Cast sheep were way short of requirements and a strong average of £78 was recored for just 219 Ewes and Rams.
