1,018 Prime Sheep

It is most definitely strange times, but we were up and running today and I’m glad we were, and doing what livestock auctions were designed to do, proving they are still the best sorting and clearing houses ever invented!
With only a modest entry of 1,018 sheep comprising 972 lambs and 46 ewes they were placed before a small tidy ringside of buyers . Now this is only a fraction of the sheep and a fraction of the usual numbers of customers we would usually have, but it’s a continuation of what we do best, and we thank everyone for their involvement today.
Trade was fairly two tier, handyweight and lightweight lambs were a good trade really, but commercial heavy lambs were sticky, just the smartest butchers sheep getting away over £100.
Pence per kilo it was Brian Church of Askwith that topped the market at 319p with 36kg Beltex at £115 purchased by Anthony Swales for his Knavesmire Butchers in York. He also purchased Beltex’s at 302p (39kg £118) from Andrew Phillips of Burton Leonard. Others at 289p 253p and 249p form the same home, 288p for Banks Farms of Worksop, 269p from EP&JM Hutchinson of Faceby and 268p form K Marshall of Darley. Top price of £124 per head was achieved on 2 occasions, first from EP&JM Hutchinson, and then from Banks Farms, with the main of the butchers types £105 to £115.
Commercial handyweight sheep 190p to 210p.
Cast sheep sold to £119.50, with others at £118.50 to average £74.99.

Further sales this week include 485 Store Cattle on Wednesday and 150 Stirks on Saturday. To keep in line with social distancing regulations only buyers are allowed to attend, and we must insist that all buyer please prebook attendance the day before the auction so arrangements can be made.

Next Monday we are open as usual for primestock and calves, and to assist us organise buyers, we ask that vendors  please pre book stock for sale with the section auctioneer. CATTLE – Jeremy Eaton 07747 780481, SHEEP – Ted Ogden 07855 958211, CALVES – Kyle Hawksworth 07538 539077. Thankyou.

A small show of calves on sale today which was no surprise with a few farmers worrying about the current situation. Today just proved that there is nothing to worry about leaving calves for us to sell at Skipton Auction. All the usual buyers ringside were operating on many accounts. Trade got away well with the calves on offer today. Bobby Angus Bulls were around the £160-£180 with Blue Heifers from P&JE Bolland selling to a ringside of active buyers. All buyers looking at purchasing all classes of calves with a shortage of Bulls on show today.

More buyers are bringing fresh orders to Skipton every week and larger numbers of calves are required. Blue Bulls of all shapes and sizes are required for next week. Fresh orders for younger sorts of commercial Continental and Native calves are coming next week as well.

Please keep selling through the live sale ring. No need to sell private at this current time with the active ringside here at Skipton.
