1,518 Prime Sheep

Spring lambs were forward in larger numbers and generally a nice trade. Smart lambs easily upkept last weeks rates with Robert Towers topping the sale at 280p/kg whilst Dave Grassam of Stockeld Park had top price per head of £117 per head. Commercial Lambs were cheaper on the week however by around 5p/kg to 10p/kg. The overall average levelled at 203p/kg.

A decent show of Prime & Light Hoggs were a shade dearer on the week, with some runs of fed hoggs still gaining a premium. Messrs Atkinson of Croft House showed a good run of 150 Continental Hoggs that were nicely sold, and at the end of their run offered 2 hoggs for sale in aid of Manorlands Hospice which were generously purchased by M Alam on behalf of Lancashire Direct Halal Meat.

A larger show of breeding sheep today for the bank holiday sold to a packed ringside of customers. Good young sheep were a sharp trade being dearer on the week, whilst older sheep maintained recent good prices as grass is more plentiful. The show was well supported and the classes for Singles created some of the top prices on the day. Jonathan Townley of Clapham had 1st prize Lowland Ewe with Lambs at foot, his correct Texel Ewe with Single Beltex Lamb setting the early pace in the sale selling for £200. Richard Stockdale of Burnsall had the first prize pen of 5 Hoggs with Lambs, selling for £185 the outfit, his run topped at £190 per outfit. Robert Johnson made £175 the outfit on two occasions for Mules with Lambs. The sale toppers however were broken mouth Swale Ewes with Twin Mule lambs from John Bland of Crowden House when selling for £220 the outfit, another ewe with Single lamb selling for £200 the outfit.

Superb trade for the calves that turned up today with Graham Hayton of Bolton Abbey topping the day with his 10 week calf at £540 with Shaun Sowray the next best at £480.  Any amount of calves over £400 today with GT Booth, S&PE Bowker, Church Farm Enterprises, A Sowray & Son, Hayton & Stocks all receiving above the £400 today.


Black and whites were a flyer with the handful of good calves selling well to an average of £116.75 and a top of £165 for a cracker from Paul & Janet Bolland, Dykelands.
