Prime Cattle (under 30 mos)

9 separate retail customers in attendance ensured that a good entry for a non-show sale got spread evenly around  with DA Gregory & Sons of Bacup leading the line with the top price on the day, a 550kg British Blue cross heifer from Mesrs AA&E Critchley & Son  of Hutton which made £1488 or 270.5p/kg. Gregorys also secured the highest priced steer a 515kg British Blue steer from Mesrs S&P Scriven which sold at 247.5p/kg or £1275. Countrystyle Butchers of Lancaster were to the fore with the second highest priced p/kg animal a Britich Blue consigned by Mesrs CD&RF Kitching of Threshfield which made 268.5p/kg or £1423. Smart cattle aside a handful of commercial cattle got away above expectations if carrying finish.

Slightly better entry of meat amongst the dairies although plenty looking full. Best of the dairies 110p+ with only an odd plain cow below 80p (at 78.5p). Beef crosses available today were at the top of their ages or genuine lean feeding types which found a ready audience.

3,541 Prime Sheep comprising 3,237 Prime Lambs & 304 Cast Ewes & Rams

A larger show of sheep all round this week, and a nice trade as well on the day. The runs of good fleshed lambs easily upkept last weeks rates, with some being dearer on the week. Top price on the day was a pen of 4 great Beltex crosses from Henry Atkinson, weighing 43kg, they sold for 267p or £115 per head to Vivers Scotlamb. Next in line was Tony Kiernan of Longridge who sold Beltex crosses to £105 per head purchased by Kendalls Farmers Butchers of Harrogate and Pateley Bridge. Henry Atkinson sold further pens at £102 and £96 twice, whilst Duncan Halliday of Sowerby Bridge had another run of nice lambs topping at £100 with others at £96.50 and £95. Tony Kiernan had further pens at £98.50. 4 further pens sold at £95 from Peter Houseman, David Pawson, Alistair Jenkinson and Martyn Jennings.
Handy weight lambs were a nice trade all day, smartest end all 210p to 230p, better end prime sorts 185p to 200p and commercial types in the 170’s. Heavier lambs were just a shade easier on the week, good sorts 175-190p, but commercial sorts 160p to 170p.
Mule Wethers again a decent trade, better end around the 160p mark. Horned wethers becoming more numerous and finding a good following so long as they are well fleshed.

Charles & Valerie Marwood of Foulrice today donated a lamb to be sold for Addington Fund this lamb sold for £90 and was bought by Mick Etherington.
The ewe trade was much sharper on the week, and a packed ringside of 11 active buyers made for healthy competition for all classes, heavy ewes and meated ewes of all breeds taking a nice step up in price, whilst a medium ewe was quite a bit sharper on the week in the face on tighter numbers everywhere.
