MARKET REPORT - MONDAY 3RD JUNE 2019

Forward: 53 Prime cattle comprising 30 Clean Cattle (under 30 mos), 1 Clean Cattle (over 30 mos) & 22 Cast Cattle. 1,407 Prime Sheep comprising 1,098 Spring Lamb, 311 Hoggs and Feeding Ewes/Rams. 53 Rearing Calves. 158 Breeding Sheep.

Prize awards

The June Primestock Show saw an outstanding show of cattle with 30 forward, most of which were high end retail types.

Mesrs RT&J Critchley&Son of Hutton sold a good pen which included the Supreme Champion a 510kg Limousin cross heifer which sold to Countrystyle Meats of Lancaster for 268.5p/kg or £1369. Also from the Cricthley pen was the first prize steer a Limousin cross weighing 550kg which also sold to Countrystyle Meats for 238.5p/kg or £1312. Top gross was a 575kg British Blue cross heifer sold by Mesrs CD&RF Kitching of Threshfield to Keelham Farm Shop of Skipton for £1394 or 242.5p/kg. Leading purchaser this week was Countrystyle Meats with 8 followed by Keelham Farm Shop at 5 and all other buyers contributing with Stanforths and Paul Ellison on 4 each.

1,407 Prime Sheep comprising 1,098 Spring Lamb, 311 Hoggs and Feeding Ewes/Rams

Lamb numbers really on the rise now with top side of 1,000 NS Lambs forward for sale and prices easing countrywide, however a solid overall average of 225p was recorded on the day. The Monthly Show saw Fox Farms from Clitheroe take championship honours with their pen of 5 Texel Beltex crosses weighing 40kg welling at £107 to The judge William Rathmell. Top price on the day per kilo went to FM Shepherd & Son Pateley Bridge 271.8p/kg selling to Hartshead Meat Co, Mossley.
Top price per kilo went to David & Laura Coar from Darwen at £124 per head selling to L Wood, Scammonden, whilst 3 pens of lambs made £118 per head, first from JC Marshall Summerbridge selling to N Dalby, then two pens from J Turner Draughton, one selling to Kendall Farm Butchers Pateley Bridge and the second to Keelham Farmshop Skipton. Three vendors MJ Spensley Elslack, DC Hall Coniston Cold, J&F Nutter Hurst Greed all sold lambs at £116 each and all three pens purchased by Swaledale Foods Skipton, whilst TA Robinson Longridge also made £116 to Kendalls Farm Butchers. The smarter ¾ bred lambs were generally 230p to 250p, a nice skinned commercial lamb 225p-230p, and a Suffolk/Texel x Mule 215p to 225p depending on weight. A commercial heavier lamb 210p.
Hoggs were a good trade for anything well fleshed, good sorts £109 £108 £103 £100 from J Barrett Barnoldswick, £108 RH Lofthouse Addingham, and £102 P Hargreaves Barrowford. Texel Ewes topped at £101, whilst horned ewes were the trade of the day seeing hill ewes average £56.36 per head and lowland ewes averaging £71.47 and Rams £81 per head.

Rearing Calves to £445 (53)

A healthy number of calves through the door this Monday with some very heady prices for the best calves today. £445 was the pinnacle today achieved by a belting calf from Shaun Sowray of Bishop Thornton, who also achieved the top price heifer at £380. Not quite the desire on the Limousin bulls today with a top of £350 for a Colin Whitelock calf.

 

Native calves were only seen in heifer form today with Hartley’s of Bolton Abbey getting their calves away nicely, topping at £190 x2. Black and whites saw a straight trade with Alf Townsend of Southfield Burnley topping at £90.

158 Breeding Sheep

A very nice entry of sheep with lambs at foot for the weekly sale, and the entry mainly made up of hoggs with lambs, best of the mule outfits £170 plus, topping at £180 from R&KA  Burley & Son of Wath, Pateley Bridge. A run of older cheviot ewes with lambs at £155 for twins and £120 for singles from Alan Horn of Winterburn.  John Wilson from Settle had a nice run of texel ewes with beltex lambs seeing 3 crop twins to £218.
