Lots of cold meat and plain cows out today with the leaner end an improved trade. The few dairies carrying flesh were 95-100p and the Beef crosses 100-112p without any standout feeding cows in the entry.

3,016 Prime Sheep comprising 2752 Prime Lamb, 264 Cast Ewes & Rams

A much increased trade today with the sale levelling at 180.1p across the board, with an SQQ for the export weights of 190.2p, and lambs generally £5-£6 a piece dearer on the week. The Monthly Show was very well supported and our judge for the day Mr Mick Etherington picked some quality lambs from Richard and Mark Ireland as his champions. These weighed 43kg and sold for £116 or 269.8p/kg to Vivers Scotlamb. This was topped by a pair of lambs form the same home which weighed 40kg at 272.5p (£109) again to Vivers Scotlamb. Messrs Ireland sold further lambs at 37kg £93 or 251p.  JM Hall of Airton sold 12 Beltex crosses weighing 39kg at 256.4p or £100 and 5 weighing 43kg at £110 each. DN&D Capstick from Bolton by Bowland had the reserve champion pen of 5, these weighed 45kg at 246p or £111 each. George Sunderland from Sykes Gate topped at 245p (42kg £103) as did Tony Kiernan for 46kg at £113. James Towler from Grindleton was also amongst the prices with Beltex to £111. Plenty of other smart pens of butchers lambs in three figures, or 230p/kg plus.
Commercial Export lambs were a good trade today, 190p to 210p a regular price, with next grade at 180p to 190p. Heavys were better as well, 170p to 180p a regular price range for the commercial types, smart sorts 190p to 220p.
Hill bred lambs were much dearer on the week, best Mules £27-£30 over the weight, whilst Horned lambs were short of numbers and would be £2-£4 dearer on the week. All in all a very pleasing day and hopefully a sign of an improved lamb trade going forward. Keep in touch with Ted for more details and our weekly requirements.

Ewes continue to improve a shade each week, with nice fleshed but lean Continental crosses very good to sell. Numbers very short today and an average of £61 was recorded.
