Champion was a 520kg British Blue cross heifer shown by Mesrs S&P Scriven of Elslack which sold to D&A Gregory&Son of Bacup who are celebrating 50 years in business this month, for 265.5p/kg. Leading price per kg was the overall reserve champion and second prize heifer from Mesrs AA&E Critchley&Son, a 515kg Limousin cross which also sold to Mesrs Gregory for 270.5p/kg or £1393. Leading gross price was the first prize steer a Limousin cross weighing 650kg from TW Cowperthwaite of Malham Moor which sold to Mesrs J&E Medcalf of Halifax for £1479 or 227.5p/kg. Top priced steer p/kg was a Limousin cross consigned by James Drake of Denholme which at 244.5p/kg (£1430) joined Countrystyle Meats of Lancaster. Trade back a shade as a result of muted retail demand after last week’s bad weather which reduced beef sales.

Cull Cow Prices

Disrupted cast cow supplies from the middle of last week caused a very strong trade for a show made up of 51 dairies from 55 entered. A number of heavy dairies 130p+ and plenty 125p+. Plain end continues to sell very well with an odd worn cow at 80p/kg and the rest 100p+.

4,240 Prime Sheep

A huge show of prime sheep met with an unbelievable trade, when the sale recorded an overall average of 245.2p/kg or £104.63 per head for just over 4,000 lambs sold, which consisted of 263 Suffolk and Down cross, 1781 Texel, 42 Charollais, 734 Mule & Masham, 628 Swaledale/Dalesbred/Lonk/Gritstone/SBF and 561 Beltex. Heavy Lambs were £120-£135 all sale long, Beltex averged £118.94 or 295p, whilst best quality Hill lambs were very good to sell with best Mules and Mashams £110-£115. Best Horned lambs were 44kg Lonks from Jim Greenwood selling for £109. Take time to look at the breed averages below to see the strength of the trade.

43 Rearing Calves to £450

Quieter show of calves today but a cracking trade for the black & whites on offer today with a lot of young calves selling for an average of £64. A run of 15 black and white bulls from Messrs Rawson of Dewsbury ranging from 12- 21 days old averaged £65. A few less continentals today however a cracking trade was had for the goods on offer with a flying trade for all. Top price of the day came from a tremendous Charollais X Bull from D&J Herd, Hebden which sold for £450.

 

Calves continuing to sell away well at Skipton with a good trade almost every week with buyers for all types and breeds.

The best trade of the season so far with Richard Umpleby topping the trade at £248 for Suffolk Ewes with Twins, followed at £238 ab £235 for Texel Twins broken mouthed Mule Ewes with lambs selling for the equivalent of £50-£60 per life.
