Prime Cattle (under 30 mos)

Jonathon Townley from Clapham had a sorte into the show ring for the May Primestock Show with a 610kg Limousin Heifer which took the Championship and the highest price per kg and gross when selling to Keelham Farm Shop for 260.5p/kg and £1589. Reserve Champion was a Limousin cross heifer from Jim Baines which weighed 530kg and made 259.5p/kg when also sold to Keelham Farm Shop of Thornton near Bradford.

Spring Lambs were forward in good numbers for a bank holiday, and with the May Prize show being held, judging was undertaken by Mr Paul Watson who awarded championship to Tim Robinson from Longridge, Paul then backed his judgement when purchasing the pair for £130 each. A similar entry of hoggs this week saw them slightly cheaper on the week as quality and demand falls off a bit late in the season. Anything well finished was still a nice trade but 2^nd quality sorts are no longer seeing store buyers putting a bottom in the trade and so discounted from previous week. Cast sheep remain a buoyant trade.

The annual special sale of hoggs and lambs and geld gimmer hoggs was held at Skipton auction today. With 97 different successful purchasers during the sale, the ringside was packed and this helped produce a highly satisfactory sale. Fantastic day around the Calf Ring with Skipton Auction proving it is the place to sell the very best calves. With the bank holiday bringing buyers from far and wide with two buyers from Lincolnshire coming to bid at our top quality calves. Continentals were electric today with 15 British Blue X Bulls averaging an outrageous £487 and topping for the Sowray Brothers Champion at £690 and 2^nd Prize bull at £670. However these were not the only high prices with Hartley’s, Bolton Abbey reaching £600 and RD Metcalfe, Brearton making £570 of another Blue Bull.  Limousin’s from Richard Spence, Low Jackfield were also hard fought over and were snaffled up at £380 twice.

Heifers were also easily sold with good heifers from the likes of Church Farm Enterprises, C&SB Whitelock and the Sowray Family forcing the trade to a Blue average of £382 and a top of £530. Native Heifers were also well received with Church Farm having the pick of the bunch and topping at £290.

All in all a brilliant day with all sellers attending going home elated and buyers maybe a little lighter in the pocket.
