A cracking show of sheep today were every bit as good to sell as anticipated. Today was just a regular Monday market but there were some great runs of lambs and £3/kilo was achieved on 2 occasions, Martin and Val Brown topped the market at £120 per head, and also at 302.9p (34kg@£103), Messrs Brown sold six pens of Beltex lambs to average 271p/kg. Henry Atkinson was the other vendor to achieve 300p/kg (37kg@£111) and his run of six pens of Beltex lambs averaged 251p/kg. James and Simon Garth and Paul Simpson also appeared in the list of highest prices.  In total 22 pens of lambs sold for over 250p/kg today and 43 pens sold for £100 or more.

Commercial lambs were easily sold today, as shown by the 36kg to 45kg bracket averaging 200p. Handy weighted export lambs were 195p to 215p depending on types, whilst nice farm assured 45kg to 47kg Continental lambs were 195p to 205p most of the sale. Heavy lambs were forward in good numbers and 50kg plus lambs were generally £90 plus, John Mellin of Hull House selling some 55kg to 60kg lambs ranging from £104 to £117 per head.

Mule and Horned lambs followed a similar trade to last week, and depending upon weight, quality and farm assured or not, they were mainly £32 to £38 over the weight. Good lightweight Swaledale’s 180p plus.

Cast Ewes were much dearer on the week and averaged just short of £70.

A young show of calves with 90% just over a month old, but some fierce bidding for some straight calves right through.

Although prices overall were down for what was sold the trade was strong for the goods.

Some strong bidding expected up until Christmas with buyers wanting to fill orders. Sales 15^th and 22^nd December.
