2,662 Prime Sheep

Another good trade for the smart end again today, Paul Simpson topped the sale at 305.3p whilst John Eddleston had 305.3p on two occasions and further pens at 300.0p and 294.6p, Peter & Edward Fox also achieving 300p for a Beltex pen. It was the Fox Brothers who topped the sale at £123, Ellis Bros close behind at £119 and £117, Paul Simpson £118 and £117 and John Eddleston £117 twice. 30 pens topped 250.0p with a further  98 pens from 200p to 249p. In the lump 39 pens made over £100 and a further 77 pens from £90 to £100 which reflects the improved trade for the heavy types. Hill type lambs were a shade dearer on the week, typically by around £2 per head. A light show of ewes were keenly contested.

91 Rearing Calves to £380

A strong show of calves forward with a better trade than recently seen especially for the better sort of black and whites which topped at a £175 for an entry from RD Guy. Continentals were a straight trade with Fred Houseman, Church Farm Enterprises topping with a strong British Blue Bull at £380 and Richard Spence chasing him £370 with another quality entry.  Native calves were topped by a sweet heifer from The Smith of Carleton reaching £275.

 

NB: Worth taking into account when comparing that today’s calves had an average age of 37 days.

Craven Dairy Auction (16 head)

 A small entry today which was perhaps a blessing in disguise with a number of buyers present but few willing to bid freely and you cannot blame them.  The pre sale Winner from Peter Baul, Bishop Thornton went on to top the day at £1660. Other noted prices was a fine 2nd calver from Forts of Glusburn reaching £1450 and £1350 for a hardy heifer from Keith Downs.
