Cull Cow Prices

Short keep cattle were a little easier in line with a falling factory price but cows with improvement, steakers and plain cows were a good trade. Likely to remain quieter except for feeding cattle until Factory Christmas purchasing of clean cattle is over.

4,843 Prime Sheep comprising 4,274 Prime Lambs & 569 Cast Ewes & Rams

Lambs - A much larger show on the week with 4274 Lambs penned for sale, but just lacking the overall quality of those seen last week, and the overall sale average was down on the week in line with this. The 4,274 lambs forward sold to a top of £138 on two occasions, first from HR&WJ Maudsley of Rathmell, and then from N&AD Boynton of Ripon. Both pens were purchased Brayton Farmshop of Selby. Messrs Maudsley sold a further lot at £134, and then JR Crabtree of Low Snowden made £131, again both lots going to Brayton Farmshop. Two other vendors achieved £131, first was JGE Heseltine & Son of Bolton Abbey, and then BL&R Lund of Walshaw, the purchaser this time being Hartshead Meat Company in Mossley, Manchester.
The first pen of sheep in the ring took top price per kilo when 40kg Beltex from AM Leach of Hebden Bridge made 317.5p or £127 per head selling to Vivers Scotlamb. HB Atkinson, Felliscliffe 37kg at £113 or 305p/kg and BL&R Lund made 300p (39kg £117) of Beltex. Both pens fell to Vivers Scotlamb.
Again, commercial handyweight lambs that were well finished have been a decent trade all sale, whilst mediums and heavies that were well fleshed but not over fat also commanding a good enquiry although not selling as dear as last week. Plainer handyweights having a strong store price behind them to keep prices moving on well, but commercial over fat heavies just finding things a little tougher.
In the hill lambs the Mules would buck the trend and find a very strong enquiry, with one highlight seeing a ring full of 48 Mules in one hit off G&MA Lawn, None go bye weighing 45kg make £90 or 200p/kg. Other best pens of Mules around 200p, whilst Paul Baines topped per kilo with 46kg at £92.50. Top price per head for Mule Wethers was £95 from FA Caton of Weston, with Taylor Bros Tosside at £94. BC Ashby of Norwood made £95 per head of Masham Wethers.
Horned lambs were again a nice trade, Dalesbreds sold to £84.50 or 192p from K Lister & Son Kettlewell, nice pens of horned wethers around 180p.

Ewes - Cracking trade once again with ewes coming far and wide. A good show of mixed ewes in the entry today with 569 through the ring. Top price £137.50 for a Texel tup from JME & C Mckenzie and top price ewe £129.50 S Spensley & Co. Good runs of Scotch Blackface ewes in today, top end with meat £47-£55 and best in today selling to £60. Best Mules to around £90 with heavies £80+ and some just a bit smaller but still carrying weight from £74 upwards. Lean meat mules £56-£68. Some plain mules less of the mark. White faced ewes usual story of Heavy best bred sorts £110+ crosses ewes £100+ for heavies. Next grade selling well £88-£95 for medium ewes full fleshed. Lean grazing continental cross ewes either side of £70. Some light weight cross ewes could be picked up in the £55-£65 region full fleshed or lean meat. Swales very similar on the week in general best sorts just a bit less at £53.50 top price from E&S Baines. Lean ewes mixed trade anywhere from late £20’s to £40. Plain swales less on the week. Good Dalesbred ewes sold well, best to £74.50.
