4,672 Prime Sheep

A much larger show met with a good trade on the day. The very smartest goods were in short supply, but those forward sold well. A nicely finished lowland lamb was every bit as dear as last week around the 175-185 mark, with commercial sorts 165p to 175p, better heavy lambs were actually dearer on the week. Better end of 45kg to 48kg around £35-£40 over the weight. Mule lambs were also dearer on the week by 3p-4p/kg, but were forward in much larger numbers with 800 in the total entry. Anything short of flesh though was discounted per kilo from the prime prices.

Rearing Calves to £430 (52)

Quieter show of calves around today but a handy trade throughout with Chris Harrison, Elslack topping the day with a strong Simmental bull at £430 with Edward Fort of Silsden Moor at £410 for a big limousin bull. Black and Whites were a handy trade again with a lot of plain calves around and still averaging £55 with the best from John Blackwell reaching £125 for a 3 ½ week old friesian bull.

Natives again were selling away well with a handy show on offer, Fred Housemans bull topped at £300 but it was his shapey heifer calf at £290 that looked like the best trade for natives. Herefords on offer were to £190 for a black heifer from Ian Briggs of Guiseley.
