4,485 Prime Sheep

Trade today was very much in line with expectations following the slacker prices seen later last week, but an overall average of 183.3p was, in truth, not a bad result on the day given that over 4,000 lambs turned out for sale, this was 12p or £5 down on last week. Lightweight lambs of all breeds were especially good to sell, good horned lambs 34kg to 37kg making 180p to 190p. Commercial Export weight sheep of all breeds were also a decent, many being not too far different to last week, 37kg to 39kg lambs 190p to 205p, 40kg to 41kg at 185p to 195p. Nice farm assured Suffolk and Continental lambs 42kg to 46kg continue to sell for a premium, with a lot of these 180p to 190p. Heavy lambs generally could not maintain last weeks flyer, and these would be quite a bit down on the week, although some good runs of Heavy Texels from Thomas Boothman and John Mellin topped £100 up to £115 from Linton Hall Farm.

A decent show of ewes were very good to sell, and all found favour with a good ring of 9 buyers stood ringside, topped at £119.50 from H&M Dugdale and £118.50 from Dick Harrison. 398 Cast rams and ewes averaged £70.99 per head.

Usual Weekly Monday Market next week. Sheep will be required in normal numbers and the advice is to bring a few sheep each Monday over the festive period. Speak to Ted if you want more information and to book sheep in. Thankyou.

Craven Dairy Auction (23 head)

A small show of dairy cattle with just 16 down the shippon, but a good show nonetheless. Judging was undertaken by regular supporter Robin Jennings from South Stainley taking the pressure of going from showing to judging and didn’t deliberate long over the entrants picking a David and Suzy Lawson heifer that was giving 20 litres and calved 21 days, the champion then proceeded to take top price of the day £2020 to Wick Williams, Nantwich.

The trade was along way back from previous weeks with the pinch taking a strong hold on a lot of farmers purse strings, but the quality went some way to help the trade today with an average of £1620 for Newly Calven Heifers, respectable considering the circumstances.
