Trevor Hardaker repeats Craven Feather Auctions championship success
Rhode Island Red poultry breeder Trevor Hardaker enjoyed a repeat championship success at the Craven Premier Poultry show and sale at Skipton Auction Mart. (Sat, Sept 5)
As in 2015, Mr Hardaker, from Lower Dunsforth, between Boroughbridge and York, lifted the title with three pullets, whose breeding lines go back to a strain from renowned Rhode Island Red man, Jack Butterworth, of Preston. One of the trio also won the best soft feather show class at this year’s Egton Show. They sold for £110, top price in show.
Mr Hardaker, who began breeding Rhode Island Reds when he retired from his own joinery business some eight years ago, has picked up prizes at every show he has attended this year. He is also well-known for breeding Yorkshire canaries virtually all his life and has won a host of show awards with them too.
Reserve champions were the first prize pen of waterfowl, Indian Runner Ducks from RS Brittain, of Bedale.
The first prize pen of small fowl, a trio of Light Sussex Bantams shown by Keith and Anne Chatburn, of Cononley, sold for £80.
The show was stewarded by Craven Poultry Keepers Club and again featured several ‘Blue Ribbon’ card-graded classes judged on quality. Vendors once more received expert feedback from experienced poultry keepers overseen by Edward Boothman, of Silsden, chairman of both the Craven club and The Poultry Club of Great Britain.
