PRIME SHEEP

A larger show of spring labs for the monthly prize show, met with a sharp trade to average some 15p/kg up on the week. Championship honours fell to J Feather, Hainworth Shaw whose 52kg charollais lambs sold at £140 each to RC&B Binns, Saltaire. Reserve champions came from regular Robert Towers, 40 kg Charollais crosses £120 each to Andrew Atkinson for Hartshead Meats.

Prime Hoggs were very good to sell, the overall average levelling at 200.5p/kg. Better hoggs, regardless of weight 220-240p/kg. Keen competition for cast sheep from a full ringside of buyers with prices around £5 better on the week.

BREEDING SHEEP

A cracking show of sheep  presented for the weekly sale today, and customers drawn from a very large area. Better geld mule hoggs trading at £130 up to £148, Continental geld hoggs £125- £160 commercial sorts around £100.

The hoggs and lambs sold well, quality outfits both mule and continental trading at £180 - £240 the outfit. Mule hoggs and singles av £191. Some quality outfits of pure texel ewes with lambs from James and Diane Stenton, Pickering sold up to £335 the outfit. REARING CALVES to £425  average £137.61

Small entry met a roaring bank holiday trade with black and whites enjoying the best of the trade with an average £98.17 and a top £185 for a strong calf from WP Gratton, Brimham Rocks and JC Marshall of Dacre also receiving a good trade for a run of 12 bucket reared black and white bulls. The selection of Continental Calves were out of the top draw with the 4-6 wk old calves averaging £356.
