A very large show of cattle at Skipton Mart today with over 900 head presented for the fortnightly sale. Young Feeding Bulls sold away to a cracking trade with all classes good to sell. The best end were up to £1360 for Limousins from Tommy Sedgewick of Burton in Lonsdale with £1300 achieved for Blue cross from Ben Townend of Laneshawbridge and £1270 from Messrs Lambert of Horton in Ribblesdale. The overall average for Feeding Bulls was £1017.95 with 49 of the 146 bulls selling for £1100 or more. The fortnightly sale of Beef Bred Feeding Cows saw an entry of 38 head, tops at £1290 for a grand young feeding type, better sorts into four figures, but a solid average of £905 per head was seen. There were 615 Store Bullocks and Heifers presented for sale, not as many strong cattle in the entry, mostly those forward were around the 18mo area making into the £1200-£1250 region. Yearling cattle were however very good to sell, Peter fox selling a 14 month bullock at £1270, John Fawcett an 11 month heifer at £1230, James Huck of Hubberholme a heifer at £1220. Plenty of the best Limousin and Charolais Bullocks 10 – 12 months old for summering at £1050 to £1150, Darren Beck from West Marton sold a run of 12 mo Charolais to £1220, and the next grade of summering bullocks £900-£1000. Good Heifers sold away fast, a lot of customers now looking for grazing heifers, nice three quarter bred sorts either side of £900, but harder sorts could still be bought with early to mid £700’s for grazing and growing on.
