STORE & BREEDING CATTLE - WEDNESDAY 24TH OCTOBER 2018

Fortnightly Sale of Young Feeding Bulls, Store Bullocks & Heifers, Breeding Cattle Forward: 705 head of cattle. Comprising: 699 Feeding Cattle (79 Young Bulls, 28 Beef Feeding Cows, 592 Bullocks & Heifers) & 6 Breeding Cattle.

It’s a time of year when feeding bulls of mixed ages are sold with the first of the spring calves, tail end of the 2017 spring calves and some useful pens of 2017 Autumn calves. Buyers generally look for strong cattle in the bulls and for this class the trade remains very firm. TH&K Wood had Limousin cattle born in December 2017 at £1110 and October 17 bulls at the same price. Mesrs Wild and Ellis sold January 2017 Limousins to £1095 whilst over 13 months saw AJ Mason lead the section with an August 17 pure Limousin bull at £1160. 2017 spring born bulls need to be in forward condition to meet the widest audience but there is a strong if selective trade for the good types at £900 to £1020.

Cast cow section saw cattle at all ends of the spectrum with a very good British Blue cow at £1280 from CT Akrigg but plenty of lean, hard worked cows at the lower end.

A large show of 700 Feeding cattle in the bottom saw strong short keep cattle good to sell regardless of quality, the medium keep types saw thr better end a decent trade, but 2nd/3rd quality types were a harder to place than of late. Not many younger cattle about today, but same story here, lesser types finding the going tougher.
