STORE & BREEDING CATTLE - WEDNESDAY 2ND SEPTEMBER 2020

Fortnightly Sale of Young Feeding Bulls, Store Bullocks & Heifers, Breeding Cattle. Forward: 569 head of cattle Comprising: 547 Feeding Cattle (57 Young Bulls, 32 Beef Feeding Cows & Bulls, 458 Bullocks & Heifers) & 22 Breeding Cattle.

Feeding Bulls – quite a few buyers making the most of dry conditions and catching up on harvest. Even with a reduced ringside the trade remained strong if slightly lower. Heavy continental bulls dropped into £1300 or just short with most pens of good feeding types at 13-14mo £1100 to £1150. This is a period where there is a traditional change over from last years spring calves to small number of autumn born and the 2020 calves.

Feeding Cows – 11 buyers in attendance today with best end of continentals £1200 and a handful of small plain hill cows in. Overall sale average of £912.

Stores – Trade dearer on the fortnight for most goods with usual bullock buyers and large short-term cattle buyers competing for numbers. Both bullocks and heifers sold to good ringside of buyers considering the last day of warm weather leaving some buyers unable to attend due to getting harvest work done. Orders still filled the ringside with usual buyers and some more farmers out this week out to buy the best heifers for both bulling and feeding. Lim Heifers sold tremendous once again with a top price paid of £1340 from F Thomas & Son followed closely behind by £1335 from Proctors farms. 98 Lim Heifers sold today with a range of all sorts with good heifers with plenty of range about them selling over £1100 and some more commercial deadweight style cattle reaching over £1000-£1150 depending on size. Smaller soft sorts of Lim heifers with almost too much covering on for age sold better on the fortnight but a much better show of feeding cattle was on show today. All other continental breeds sold very well with the majority going to feed. Strong heifers still £1050+. Long term growers £780-£900. Some long term 12-month-old Angus heifers in the £600 mark reaching to the £720’s depending on frame. Steer trade flew along today no matter what the breed or frame. Blue Bullocks sold to £1390 Ashfield Farms Followed behind by 6 cattle from Bargh Bros at £1370. Dairy bred steers with size at 20 months plus £1050+ with suckler bred 18 months plus cattle £1150 regular with many reaching heights of £1250+ for good meat and frame. Char Bullock from P+E Fox sold to £1400. 45 Angus bullocks sold to an average of £958 with all bullocks ranging from £810-£1135. Black and whites sold well away with more cattle coming smaller than the spring cattle that was seen a few months ago with prices still flying for these goods. £950 for some good strong cattle from R Naylor & Sons. The total breed average came to £839 including the longer-term grazing sorts which wanted more size before finishing selling around the £640-£740. More cattle wanted for next fortnights store sale with prices dearer than expected for most cattle today.
