STORE LAMBS - WEDNESDAY 23RD SEPTEMBER 2020

Fortnightly Catalogue Sale of Store Lambs Forward: 8735 Head, Overall av £78.42 Another large entry of lambs with 8,735 head sold levelling at £78.42 across the board, with trade easily up three notches on the previous fortnight for all classes, with the sale including a large entry of hill lambs with 2200 Mule/Masham Wethers and 500 Horned Wethers in the entry, together with the second sale of drawn Suffolk & Continental Gimmer Lambs.


 

Lowland store lambs were in high demand, Suffolk Wethers selling from a minimum of £68 up to a top of £85, nice sorts either side of £80. Suffolk Mule Gimmer Lambs were from £80 to £100 to level at £92.
Texel Lambs were in high demand, best stores in the £90’s, strong stores in the 80’s, keeping lambs in the mid to late 70’s, genuine wintering types in the £60’s. A good proportion of continentals from horned ewes about today, and these finding a strong enquiry.
Texel Mule and ¾ bred Texel Gimmer Lambs forward in large numbers again today, although the quality was more variable than the main sale. Best end up to £132 twice from P Crabtree & Son Otley, a run of 200 from JA&JH Hewetson hit £120 twice and levelled at £115, whilst the second consignment of 250 from AL Dean & Son also topped £120 £115 and £112. Medium sorts generally in the £90’s to £108 range, smaller running types mid 70’s to late 80’s.
Beltex lambs were a cracking trade all day, for a show that were mainly long keep types. Tops at £115, with nice types either side of £100, and small lambs either side of £90.

The 2200 Mule & Masham wethers levelled at £74.50 and hit £82.50 for a pen of 42 Mules from A Schindler, £80 for Mules from Flash House Farms, and £80 for Mashams from JM Wilson & Son, Beckwithshaw.  Hill lambs sold tremendous today with 414 Swales of all sizes selling to a top of £62 from Flash House Farms and a total breed ave of £55. All long-term horned lambs sold above £46. Many pens of 30-50 Honed lambs going through at a time. 108 Dalesbred weathers sold to £61 with trade just the same as these as for the Swales. Cheviots sold dearer on the week with tops of £80 from A Whittle and all goods selling upwards of £60 to a total avg of £70. Plenty of buyers forward today with some leaving with very few numbers. Large numbers will be required next week for buyers local and a far now dairy farmers have started to fill ground up for the winter grazing.

 

Numbers are coming forward very well for the next sale from local and a far which is on Wednesday 7th October, and we again anticipate top side of 10,000 lambs with buyers keen to come and pick from large level lots of Mules Cont X and Hill lambs.
