3,503 Prime Sheep

No let up in numbers today. The day set off with a tidy entry of Spring Lambs that were good to sell with retail butchers and wholesalers alike competing strongly. A larger show of Old Season Lambs were just a shade easier with the overall average down only 2p/kg on the week. The averages show 2,018 head in the Standard Quality Quotation (SQQ – upto 45kg) at 215.7p/kg with an overall average for the 2932 head of 209.8p/kg, a remarkable overall average considering 1,463 head were lowland breeds and 1,469 head were hill and horned bred lambs.

In the cast ewe market trade was on a high note, strong continental and Suffolk cross ewes were in strong demand, whilst well fleshed but not over fat ewes finding a very good following

622 Breeding Sheep

A fantastic show of sheep with lambs at foot drew a large crowd of buyers. The quality end were an exceptional trade with several vendors seeing the equivalent of £75 to £85 per life for singles and twins. With more young outfits on offer today there was greater choice for buyers looking to put sheep into a flock this summer whilst the usual selection of older sheep with strong lambs offered feeders plenty to bid at.

Today we held  our Early Show & Sale of Ewes with Lambs @ Foot. Our thanks to the judge Mr Richard Caton for offering his expertise and the Sale Sponsors Brian Hoggarth Ltd & JG Animal Health

55 calves forward with a good quality throughout. Pick of the day had to be a British Blue from Charles Marwood, a suckled calf with lots of potential eventually touching the heights of £475. Black and White calves met an up and down trade with well fed calves good to sell with emphasis still on three weeks old plus. Angus calves making a respectable average for good strong sorts as usual.

Next week all types wanted with extra buyers in attendance a healthy consignment would be beneficial to all.
