SHEARLING GIMMERS - TUESDAY 19TH AUGUST 2014

Forward: 4,019 head of Shearling Gimmers CCM Auctions conducted their Great Annual Prize Sale of Gimmer Shearlings at Skipton on Tuesday. Sheep were shown in fine fettle and trade was slightly better on the year, with the overall selling average rising by £7.53 on the year. In the morning the prize show for Mules was judged by Mr Andrew Ogden of Cowling and Mr Warwick Gill, Melton Mowbray. This year the Edgar Boothman Trophy for the best pen of Mule shearlings was awarded to Mr John Greenhalgh of Bashall Eaves. They later sold at £215 each to Mr Gill. The second prize pen from Peter & Edward Fox of Clitheroe achieved the same price and went to the same purchaser.

94 Rearing Calves to £700 B&W av £71.98 Cont av £389.8 Native av £188.7 Skipton Calf show was once again a huge success with a large ringside of buyers making a fantastic trade in all sectors with a trade not seen since the spring. Once again the Sowray Family of Bishop Thornton struck gold with a fantastic Blue Bull at 41 Days old making a record breaking £700, Yes that’s right and heading its way to the east coast. Other noted vendors were the Houseman’s of Burton Leonard and Colin Whitelock of Gargrave both making big prices with some fantastic continental calves.

STORE CATTLE - WEDNESDAY 13th AUGUST

Fortnightly Sale of Young Feeding Bulls, Store Bullocks & Heifers, Breeding Cattle. Forward: 345 head of cattle. Comprising: 62 Young Feeding Bulls, 249 Bullocks & Heifers, 31 Breeding Cattle & 3 Grazing Cattle. Store Cattle trade went back up a gear today at CCM Auctions Fortnightly Sale at Skipton Mart. A marvellous show of strong cattle attracted a full turn out of buyers and trade was as sharp as it has been seen for several sales. The usual exemplary show of suckled calves and yearling cattle were also good to sell, with quality bullocks especially well sought. Bull trade was also seen to be slightly dearer as feeders respond to cheaper corn prices and a slightly improved prime price.

Forward - Craven Dairy Auction (39 head) A large entry forward with good consignments from Keith Downs and Malcolm and Robert Swires going a long way to ensure the use of the overflow stalls. With shippon full to bursting it was not an easy task for the judge eventually pinning the top rosette to a fine heifer from the returning Swires family. The heifer calved 10 Days and giving 32 litres was eventually knocked down for £2,000 to regular supporters Alf and Andrew Townsend, the father and son team also bought the reserve champion from the same family for £2120, a fantastic 2nd Calver with 40kgs on her.

STORE LAMBS - WEDNESDAY 6th AUGUST 2014

SKIPTON AUCTION MART MARKET REPORT – WEDNESDAY 6th AUGUST 2014 Fortnightly Catalogue Sale of Store Lambs. Forward: 4,775 Head – 4517 Store Lambs & 258 Breeding Sheep. Overall av £57.53 At Skipton Auction Mart on Wednesday, CCM Auctions had another large entry for the fortnighty sale of store sheep which sold away nicely. A large ringside of customers assembled and trade soon got into a similar level to that seen last fortnight. More buyers are now getting ready to take longer keep lambs, whilst seasonal customers will also looking be for Suffolk x Mule Gimmer Lambs in early September.

STORE CATTLE - WEDNESDAY 30TH JULY 2014

Forward: 278 head of cattle Comprising: 62 Young Feeding Bulls, 182 Bullocks & Heifers, 30 Breeding Cattle Light show of cattle and feeding yards only part full because of recent uncertainty in the prime beef market combined with forecasts of lower feed prices to bring a good attendance of buyers. Good shaped bulls farm assured and with time to finish under 16 months continue to be the choice for specialist feeders but a few customers at the lower end looking for bulls to put away. Steers and heifers continued in similar style with stronger types getting well into 4 figures and once again customers for quality young cattle to grow on. A useful collective of breeding cattle saw a number of good quality families of interest to premium suckled calf breeders with Sam Berry topping the sale with his 2011 British Blue Heifer selling with her Limousin Heifer calf at foot to Mac Townsend for £2000.

Craven Dairy Auction (34 head) A big show with a lot of cattle unentered arriving and making a good shippon full of newly calved heifers. Despite the shippon full trade was strong especially for those well presented cattle like those of Robin Jennings and Shaun Hickey who made £2300 and £2250. Other vendors also met a stiff trade with Chris Broadwith of Thornton Watlass pushing into the top prices with a lovely heifer reaching a deserved £2250.

Metcalfe success breaks stranglehold at Skipton store lamb show North Yorkshire farming brothers Robert, Chris and Richard Metcalfe finally got their hands on a trophy they have long been keen to win when sending out the champion pen of 50 Suffolk-cross lambs at Skipton Auction Mart’s second major seasonal store lamb show and sale.

Forward: 4,380 Head – 4,207 Store Lambs & 173 Breeding Sheep Store Sheep Overall av £59.24 Another nice entry of Store Lambs forward at the fortnightly sale and trade just slightly dearer than the opening sale. Trade still sensible though with an overall selling average of £59.24 (+£2.51)
