Prime Sheep, Sales Every Monday at 12:30pm
3,456 Prime Sheep comprising 2986 Prime Hoggs, 470 Cast Ewes & Rams

LAMBS
A decent entry of 2,986 lambs presented for sale today, but trade at the morning markets up and down the country set off lower than anticipated as processors just come under a bit of pressure on the sales front and this followed into the afternoon market at Skipton. Handyweight and lightweight sheep would take the least hurt on the week with these selling at a reasonable trade, smart retail types were a decent go too, but once things started to get to the commercial level of goods, especially weighing late 40’s or above the job got decidedly harder work.
OVER 52kg
The average for this weight category was £6 down on the week, Messrs EP&JM Hutchinson taking the lead price of £170 per head, but after these the majority of the leading prices were in the £150’s or £140’s this week. Messrs JC Marshall made 288p of 53kg Texels selling at £153 to A Atkinson.
46kg to 52kg
Messrs Hutchinson made £155 and £154 or 335pkg, again to A Atkinson. Most of the better lambs achieving in the £140’s or either side of 300p. Commecial lambs in this weight range found the job much tougher this week though with reduced demand.
36kg to 45kg
A lot more commercial lambs in this weeks entry with less of the best smart types on offer. Walter Parkinson of Garstang took top kilo price this week at 379p when selling 42kg at £159 per head. Messrs Parkinson also sold at £150 twice £145 and £144 in a good run of Continental crosses. Many pens of other nice skinned smart sorts from £150 down to £135 or 310p to 350p.

Mule & Masham Wethers cheaper on the week. Some heavies form EP&JM Hutchinson made £130, KN&CA Heath of Macclesfield reached £124.50 and £123.50 from CD&RF Kitching. Per kilo seeing best end into the 250’s and 260’s, hitting 263p from Steve Dorey, Newark.
Horned and Hill Wethers a straight trade but again not as dear as last week, fleshy lightweights 220p to 240p depending on quality and breed.

EWES –
Ewes a stronger trade with all classes a touch dearer! Best bred ewes selling to a more competitive audience ringside , no best heavy Texels in but some good full meat ewes forward! Char ewes sold to £176.50 from Chris Buckley, Holmfirth & Texel x ewes from the same vendor £173.50. Best bred ewes fed on hoppers £150-£177.50 depending on size. Some small Beltex ewes £135-£150. First crossed ewes £135-£150 with medium first cross full meat ewes £115-£130. Small full meat ewes £95-£110. Lean ewes £80-£100 with plain white faced ewes £60-£75.
Cheviot ewes sold to £113.50 from A&B Simpson, Hope Valley.
Mules sold to £124.50 from High Harbour Farm, Middle Rasen. Heavy mules £110-£120 mediums £105-£108 and lean mules £85-£92. Plain mules £50-£65.
Swales sold to £85.50 from M&R Smith, Winterburn. Best Swales £70-£80 with mediums £45-£60 and plain ewes £30-£42. Gritstone’s sold to £103.50 from Lister Brown, Halifax.
