Prime Cattle (under 30 mos)

Joint top price per kg was 277.5p/kg paid by Robertshaws Farm Shop for a 565kg British Blue cross steer from F&B Smith of Masongill amounting to £1568.  Mesrs CD&RF Kitching sold the equivalent highest priced p/kg heifer a 595kg Limousin cross at 277.5p/kg or £1651 which was the highest gross price to Robert Pearson buying for Ralph Pearson of Bradford who swept all before them with an outstanding pen of cattle which also included both leading gross priced steers both from Mesrs Kitching, both British Blue crosses, both weighing 605kg and £1643 (271.5p/kg) and £1637 (270.5p/kg).

Liveweight prime cattle remain a good trade despite attempts to reduce direct prices and a direct result of low suckler bred clean cattle numbers.

1,360 Prime Sheep comprising 488 Spring Lambs & 682 Hoggs & 190 Cast Ewes & Rams

Spring Lambs were another good entry of nearly 500 head this week and no let up in trade with an average of 354p across the board, a quick scoot around AHDB shows that comparing favourably to other markets this morning and end of last week, but there were less Hoggs and Cast Sheep on the yard this week with Ramadan having finished late last week, but the tighter numbers held the trade together fairly well for anything well fleshed.

Spring Lambs – Messrs Phillipson of Briercliffe were top of the shop this week for lambs when achieving £176 per head to James Robertshaws Farmshop at Thornton, and others at £170 per head to L Wood & Son of Scammonden.
Tony & Kay Kiernan of St Michaels were next in line at £171 per head to Kendalls Farm Butchers of Pateley Bridge and Harrogate, and Mark Evans Steeton also made £171 to West Scottish Lamb in Carlisle.
Others at £170 were EP&JM Hutchinson to Robertshaws and S&CR Battye Penistone to West Scottish Lamb.
Per kilo, Messrs D&L Coar of Darwen had the top three pens at 390p 385p and 384p all selling to West Scottish Lamb.
488 Head in total levelled at 345p/kg (349p SQQ)

Hoggs - A very mixed show of hoggs this week. Heavies were still a decent trade, but not on the same scale as recent weeks, with £160 to £170 the range for the best end on offer, chief price of £170 from EP&JM Hutchinson.
Handy weight hoggs with meat on board were a good trade again, lowland sorts 310p to 330p, Cheviots 280p to 310p, Blackies 280p to 295p, and best handy weight Swales were 270p to 290p and not far off last weeks levels.
Any end of season types lacking flesh or just plain oddments were selling as well can be expected, but there will still be a nice bit of trade for anything well fleshed for a couple of weeks yet. A good entry for next week please. Speak to Ted or Kyle for more details.

Ewes - Cull ewes sold better than expected with more ethnic trade back ringside after the end of last weeks festival. A shortage of ewes in general saw buyers competing strong for numbers. 190 sold through the ring. White faced ewes sold tremendous. Best ewes £138-£157.50. Medium well bred £115-£120. ¾ meat Texel cross ewes £105-£115. Swales sold well with top price £93.50 from F Sowerby, Halton Gill followed by £83.50 from M Stocks, Heptonstall. Meat swales £80-£95, Lean ewes £55.50-£65. Mediums crossed continental ewes’ full meat £105-£121 with lean ewes £92-£105. More ewes required next week with fewer numbers nationally an increased trade will be expected.
