Prime Cattle (under 30 mos)

Bradford wholesalers Ralph Pearson were the main buyers in a light show of clean cattle which underlined why premium cattle are such a good trade. On the selling side it was CD&RF Kitching of Threshfield who made it a full house with both top gross priced steer and heifer and highest p/kg steer and heifer.

Highest gross was a 620kg Limousin cross steer at £1690 (272.5p/kg) whilst Mesrs Kitching also fielded the highest gross priced heifer a 605kg Limousin cross which made £1667 or 275.5p/kg, which was also the top priced p/kg animal. Top priced p/kg steer weighed 595kg and was also a Limousin consigned by Mesrs Kitching which made 272.5p/kg with all of the top prices falling to Robert Pearson. Trade was a shade easier on the week but underlying demand for suckler bred beef is very strong because numbers available are low.

2,938 Prime Sheep comprising 98 Spring Lambs, 2484 Hoggs & 356 Cast Ewes & Rams

Another excellent show of sheep today as they keep arriving form a wide area.

Spring Lambs.
Nearly 100 Spring Lambs were an excellent trade with retail butcher customers keen looking for supply and additional buyers operating this week, many more could have been sold as the average of 376.6p/kg clearly shows.
Prices peaked at £192 per head (44kg 436.4p) from J Fisher & Son Whitechapel purchased on behalf of Thompson Wholesale Meats Witton le Wear.
A&K Kiernan Preston were close behind at £188 per head or 427.3p, this time selling to L Brown, with others at £184 and £180.
First time vendors PB Fox & Son, York topped their run at £187 with Texel crosses selling to Thompson Wholesale Meats, others from the same run at £178 (40kg 445p/kg £178) to Vivers Scotlamb and £178 to N Dalby.
Ian Briggs from Guiseley made £179 of Continentals again to Thompson Wholesale Meats.
Robert Towers of Ingleton made 421.4p of Continental crosses.
Craven Farms from York topping the down cros breeds with Suffolk crosses at 390.9pkg.

Hoggs.
Numbers holding up very well, and trade still fairly sharp as well, with handy and medium weights still an excellent trade, whilst heavies were easier on the week. The overall average still stands at 300p for every hogg sold (SQQ 308p), or £137.91 per head.

Heavies still sold to £180 for 60kg Continentals from EP&JM Hutchinson Faceby purchased by Hartshead Meat Co, Mossley, also selling 57kg’s at £177 to Hartshead Meats. MJ&G Dobson Hartlington achieved £179 of Continentals to A Atkinson, PW Simpson £177 of 50kg to Robertshaws Farmshop, JR Crabtree Otley 51kg at £176 and P Johnson Trawden 53kg at £175. Generally though commercial lowland heavies were cheaper on the week and meeting a bit of resistance when compared to recent weeks.

Medium weights of lowland lambs were still good to sell, smarter butchers sheep £172 & £169 for 47kg Continentals from MJ&G Dobson, Hartlington also £168 for 46kg and £168 for 44kg from the same home. A&K Kiernan made £168 of 46kg Continentals, Hill & Wright Doncaster made £166 of 46kgs. David & Karen Shuttleworth, Heber Park Beltex made £168 of 44kg, and Rob Bailes Boroughbridge made £166 of 44kg Continentals. Other commercial mediums 300p to 330p, plainer medium weight sorts easing under 300p at times in the day.
Nothing wrong with the decent finished finished Medium Hill lambs as they met with a firm trade. Blackies around 44kg/45kg making £137 to £143 or 290p to 315p. Decent Mules into 260p/270p bracket with best sorts a touch more, Swales and Lonks could make a similar price range.

Lowland Export weights and best retail shop lambs were a decent go today, especially seeing as many regular good runs are coming to a close for the season. SP Woolhouse & Son, Doncaster took top price at 390p (41kg £160) to Vivers Scotlamb, who also took lambs at 389p and 387p from HB Atkinson. PW Simpson made 384p, whilst Messrs Woolhouse made 381p, as did Heber Park Beltex and MJ&G Dobson.
Handyweight Mules and Swales could get into the 270p/280p price range regular away, whilst best Cheviot types in this weight range nearer 320p/330p, and horned lambs pushing 300p.

Lightweights as usual as excellent trade. Fleshy horned hoggs around 300p, as were other good hill breds. Plainer sorts harder to cash. Good Continentals from 300p to 350p.

Ewes avg £95.50 today all through with a lot lighter show if ewes in! Heavies stopping the same trade with buyers out for Heavy continentals! Prices still seem as AL Thompson topped Texels at £169.50. Best bred heavies £160+ crossed heavies full meat £140-£155. Medium ewes a touch less today with ethnic orders looking a bit steadier due to the fasting month going ahead! £98-£120 for mediums with meat! Lean ewes could be bought in the £75-£88 and plain ewes less money from last week £55-£65! Heavy mules upto £120.50 plenty £100+ with 75 overall averaging £94. Lean mules £75-£88 and plain ewes below with good meat mediums £85-£100. Swales topped at £101.50 plenty of good meat ewes £70-£88 lean Swales £48-£68 plain ewes £25-£38.
