Prime Cattle (under 30 mos)

A good response to the call for R grade cattle in handier weights had a dampening effect on the averages but still a strong underlying trade. Phil Gregory of DA Gregory and Sons of Bacup was in attendance securing the highest priced p/kg animal a 565kg British Blue cross heifer from CD&RF Kitching of Threshfield for 261.5p/kg or £1478. Gregorys added another heifer this time a 495kg Limosuin cross heifer from JW Stockdale & Son of Burnsall at 260.5p/kg the same price as a 545kg Limousin heifer from Mesrs Kitching which sold to Robertshaws Farm Shop at Thornton for the gross value of £1420. Bradford wholesalers Ralph Pearson bought the highest priced steer at 257.5p/kg a 590kg Limousin cross from Mesrs Kitching which was also the leading gross priced steer at £1519 before accounting for the top gross of the day a 620kg Limousin cross steer from SD Bennett of Silsden Moor for £1603 or 258.5p/kg. This was a varied show with cattle for all tastes including a good number 530kg and below.

Another great trade all round at Skipton with 3,000 Lambs levelling at 287p across the board, an SQQ of 293p, and per head that represents £122.91. Trade in general very similar on the week, best end 350p to 420p or £140 to £170 per head, commercial lowland lambs 280p to 320p, heavy lambs £135 to £155 regualar away, Mule Wethers £2 or £3 a piece dearer.

 

Lowland Lambs over 52kg –  Texels averaged £144.33 in this weight category today with nice sorts £140 to £155, Suffolks saw several pens of Suffolk Mules £130 to £145. JE Burrow took principle in the range with £158 paid by Knavesmire Butchers of York. 8 further pens at £150 and above, inc RA&E Smith Acaster, York at £155 selling to Robertshaws Farmshop in Thornton and also from EP&JM Hutchinson of Faceby selling to Worsley Wholesale Butchers.

 

46kg to 52kg Lowland Lambs – Joint top price on the day was achieved by A&K Kiernan of St Michaels when selling Beltex crosses weighing 46kg at £170 per head, again purchased by Knavesmire Butchers in York. S Forshaw & Son of Alston, Longridge were close behind at £168 again for 46kg selling to Vivers Scotlamb.

 

36kg to 45kg Lowland Lambs: The Lancashire lads were well and truly to the fore today, as Walter & Rob Parkinson weren’t to be outdone by Messrs Kiernan and Forshaw, when they also achieved £170 & £169 per head for Continentals, both pens weighing 42kg and making 404p/kg and 402p/kg respectively selling to Vivers Scotlamb.  The top kilo prices all came in this range, as JE Burrow also achieved 400p/kg when selling 42kg at £168 per head to Knavesmire Butchers who also purchased 44kg Continentals at £160 from A&K Kiernan. A run of Homebred Beltex crosses from Henry Atkinson topped the sale at 420p/kg when 15 head weighing 38kg sold at £160. Others at 400p or more inc PA&NS Tattersall, Ellerton, York with 39kg at £158 also to Knavesmire Butchers. 400p was also achieved by S&P Scrivin when they sold 39kg at £156.

 

 

35kg and less Lowland Lambs: 4 pens of lights over £100 this week, J Brigg Allerton leading the way at £110 for 35kg and JS Stephenson Bordley £107 for 34kg. Better end 280p to 310p.

 

Mule and Masham Wethers – Mule & Mashams into the £130’s again this week as Derbyshire vendors A&B Simpson Hope Valley made £133 and £132.50 and other pens at £125 and £123, with N&J&S Taylor, Hollows Meadows up at £125 for a pen of 35 weighing 46kg. CD&RF Kitching also made £125, Steve Dorey £124, and another Derbyshire vendor D&L Wain of Ashbourne at £123.50. Phillip Metalfe Otterburn and Taylor Bros Tosside both made £123. Mashams topped at £132 when EP&JM Hutchinson sold a pen full to Swaledale Foods in Skipton.  

 

Other hill bred lambs: Cheviot Lambs leading the way today with pens making £156 and £140 from A&K Kiernan. S&P Scrivin of Elslack sold horned lambs at £118, followed by N&J&S Taylor Hollows Meadows at £117.50. Nice Horned Wethers very good to sell around 240p/265p, with 33kg to 36kg lambs again finding a good following.

 

Ewes – Ewes a tremendous trade! Most goods similar but Swales and Mules heading upwards to much higher prices than seen for a long time. Big Heavies Similar trading £130-£142.50 for continentals with BFL to £161.50 Medium continental ewes £100-£115. Pure bred mediums £110-£130 Lean Ewes trading £84-£90 with half meat cross breds similar. And Plain goods £72-£80. Horned Ewes a real trade. Best Swales £85-£91.50, Medium Swales with meat £62-£75 small/ plain ewes £40-£55. Cheviots to £125.50 from Fleets Farms. Scotch Blackface Ewes to £74.50 for meat and Lean ewes £50-£62. Mules to £113.50 from SN Coy, Rotherham. Heavy mules £92-£105 Mediums £80-£90 lean £74-£80 and plain ewes £60 odds.

Great to see trade topping today with this Silver Ridge Extreme daughter sold by Mick Blackwell to Mark Goodall from Tong at £2550. Yet again more buyers than sellers saw a solid trade average of £2225 for the four fresh heifers thanks to the sellers Messrs Booth, Blackwell and Crisp and all the regular buyers. 154 Breeding Sheep

Ewes with lambs at foot sold to regular audience with a few extra faces seen ringside pushing trade on. Nearly a full entry of Broken mouthed ewes.  A ewe with an early born single lamb sold to £225 for the outfit. CM Ryder also sold a Texel cross ewe with a single at £210. Top price Mules with Twins was at £240 from W&M Bland, Malham for Broken Mouth, correct below ewes with 2-3 week old Suffolk lambs at foot. Texel cross ewes with twins sold to £315 from J Barnes, again for a Broken Mouthed ewe with 2 early born lambs. CM Ryder and Richard Umpleby both sold Texel cross ewes with Twins at the £270-£285 range. Some older goods with younger lambs traded around £205-£215
