Prime Cattle (under 30 mos)
Alistair Hargreaves of Walton Hall headed the chief prices with 3 heavy steers a Limousin weighing 695kg grossing £1963 (282.5p/kg) and a Charolais weighing 700kg £1908 (272.5p/kg) both selling to Ralph Pearson, wholesale butchers in Bradford. Leading price per kg at 295.5p/kg and the highest grossing heifer at £1723 was a 595kg Limousin cross sold by Mesrs CD&RF Kitching of Threshfield which also sold to Pearsons wholesale butchers. A very good trade with an average weight of 615kg and a steer average of £1817.

Cull Cow Prices
A light show of cast cows and meat in short supply. Cows of all categories a very good trade with a young MRI feeding cow at 147.5p/kg best of the dairies. Better end of the Black and Whites 138.5p/kg with nothing in top grades and once agin the plain cows into 120-130p. Channel Islands cows were to 95.5p/kg. First cross Continentals to 143.5p/kg.

3,871 Prime Sheep comprising 3,126 Prime Lambs & 745 Cast Ewes & Rams

A much larger show of sheep met with an excellent trade again this week and levelled up at 238p across the board for 3,126 head.
Heavy lambs were very good to sell, with commercial types well finished at 240p, but anything smarter for butchers making 250p to 280p. Smart Heavy lambs 48kg to 55kg could make £140 to £155 regular away with M Ryder & Son Harrogate selling at £155, £154 three times and £152. N&AN Boynton of Ripon had heavies at £152 as well, whilst EP&JM Hutchinson sold heavies at £151.50.
Messrs Boynton also sold mediums at £172 when their 45kg Beltex crosses made 382p/kg selling to Knavesmire Butchers of York.
The highest price on the day was a lamb that was donated by Andrew, Jill & Henry Atkinson of Harrogate and the proceeds were to be added to the Charity funds in aid of Sepsis UK in memory of Hannah Brown. The lamb made a fantastic £280 when selling to Brayton Farmshop of Selby. Thankyou to all concerned.
Medium lambs were a good trade again today as buyers look to well fleshed lambs to give the premium prices. 45kg to 48kg lambs saw several purchasers keen. A handy weight lambs late 30’s to early 40’s saw smart goods 270p to 310p regular away, nice sorts 240p to 260p and commercial goods 220p to 235p.
Hill bred lambs coming forward in much larger numbers, and Mule wethers were good to sell, regularly 215p to 229p, some smart sorts making more. Heavy Mules ranging £105 to a top of £123 from JK Wilson & Son of Blubberhouses, and £117.50 from PL Metcalfe of Otterburn, and per kilo up to 229p from KA&HL Fawcett of Barden

745 Cull Ewes forward with an overall avg of £79.68. Trade just a couple of easier with a very mixed show in again. With some centers over the end of last week having a much bigger drop in trade. More style and size about with Heavy well-bred ewes £140-£159.50 mediums £125-£140 Smalls either side £100. First cross Heavies £130+ medium full meat £115-£135 lean mediums £98-£112 plain grazing white-faced ewes £70-£85. Heavy mules £105-£117.50 with some massive ewes up to £125.50. Medium mules £85-£95 full meat with lean ewes £75-£82 and plain in the £50’s-£65 range. Horned ewes a nice trade with £90 stopping any full fleshed big ewes, mediums £70 and lean mediums £40-£50 small ewes £20-30 with plain from the teens to the late £20’s.

38 Rearing Calves to £450

Calves again selling to a range of buyers where many more could have been sold to the seller’s advantage. Purchasers from Middlesbrough, South Yorkshire and surrounding areas came for all classes. Black and Whites avg £94. Top price of £145 from IR&DE Wellock, Kirkby Malham. Rearing calves with colour £100-£140 and more Holstein bred sorts £75-£90 with a small down to £55. Native bulls and heifers a tremendour trade with Bulls avg £309 and heifers £286. Angus bulls sold to a top of £380. Best ended goods £340-£360 average sort of angus bulls £280-£320. Hereford bulls all sold from £295-£335. Angus heifers £230-£280 for medium goods from 4-8 weeks of age. Blue bulls sold to £450 from LD&MA Clarke, Thornton-In-Craven with Percy, Janet and James Bolland, Airton following closely behind at £445. Blue bulls avg £380 with medium goods £330-£370.
