Prime Cattle (under 30 mos)

Charles and Richard Kitching of Threshfield took the honours in the cattle section with top gross animal a 635kg Limousin cross steer which grossed £1762 when making 277.5p/kg when sold to Ralph Pearson, wholesale butchers from Bradford.

The steer’s, heifer counterpart a 590kg Limousin cross also from Mesrs Kitching made £1625 or 275.5p/kg selling to Robert Pearson. Trade very similar with the best mid 270s and the commercial cattle including British Blue cross dairy fed heifers at 555kg to 236.5p/kg. Continental steers average 274p/kg av wt 620kg and Continental heifers 245p/kg av. wt 537Kg

Cull Cow Prices

More cattle carrying finish in the entry and liveweight trade continues to exceed expectations in the face of a falling factory price and cancellations. Heavy dairies 135p+ and the steaking cows nudging 130p/kg looking the best trade. Plain dairies 90-110p. Beef crosses still a very good, a Limousin with scope for improvement 160p and the heavy first cross Beef cows circa 150p.

Lamb numbers increasing week by week, and trade going up as well as more wholesalers switch to lamb from hoggs and need supply. The best quality were a trade not seen anywhere before and vendors looking for where to sell need not look any further than CCM. Lambs overall average were 355.2p or £143.42 per head, £37 a piece up on the year!
Todays chief prices came from Messrs PB Fox & Son who travelled from Dunnington, East of York with a quality run of 25 Lambs and went home with an amazing average of 465p/kg, and topping the sale at 513.9p/kg or £185 per head to Worsley Wholesale Butchers, others from the same home at 500p or £190 to Vivers Scotlamb, who also purchased at 490p from the same home. Messrs Fox also made 486p 482p and 481p.
David Breaks of Slaidburn made 481p, TA Robinson Longridge 478.9p & 457p, PA&NS Tattersall 470p, DJ Grassam 464p, G&MM Dakin & Son 452p. 17 other pens of lambs made 400p or more.
In the lump KJ Marston of Otley topped at £202 per head for Charollais crosses selling to Brayton Farmshop Selby. Messrs Fox were next at £196 others at £190 twice and £188, TA Robinson £192 and £188, JR&DL Ogden Austwick £190, PA&NS Tattersall £188. 33 more pens of lambs made form £170 to £185.

A typical late season affair amongst the hoggs, but the trade didn’t show it with nice Continentals £150 to £180 regular away or 300p to 340p. Commercial goods 250/300p. Hill bred hoggs saw meated horned breeds 270p to 300p. The trade will be there for several more weeks yet. Keep them coming.

Trade once again at Skipton showing how numbers of any classes of ewes can be handled. A large run of ewes travelling up from Lincolnshire to be sold once again with the rest of the market being full of local farmers ewes. Best ewes in demand. 164 White faced ewes avg £114. Ewes topped at £160.50, £159.50 from the same vendor. A Texel ewe from EP&JM Hutchinson, Middlesbrough sold to £158.50. Westalls, Burnley sold a smart medium pure ewe to £147.50. Best weighing ewes £128+ medium ewes £105-£115 and Lean selling ewes £85-£98. Only a Few plain ewes below the mark. Swales sold tremendous with meat £80-£97.50 depending on size. Medium ¾ meat ewes either side of £75 Lean ewes £45-£65 again size dependent and plain followed suit. All in all, Swales avg £65. Cheviots, Lonks and Gritstones found a good trade again. Beltex to £137.50 from G&MM Dakin, Clitheroe.

Calves short of requirements today with most vendors either shut up from buying in or waiting for the Bank Holiday Sale next week. Blue bulls sold well again, best selling at £410, £400 from Hartleys of Beamsley. A couple of young end goods either side of £300. Blue heifers ranged from £275 for youngest to £305-£315 for 3-4 weeks old. Lim heifers all at £260-£280.

Ewes and Lambs sold to a wide audience of buyers for all goods, older outifts aswell as the Hoggs with lambs. Correct Suffolks from L Broster, Lindley Moor sold to £170 with the same Vendor selling Mules singles at £142. Suffolk Ewes with twins from the same farming topped at £220. The odd pens of Mules and Mashams maybe a touch less on the week with younger lambs forward again. Older mules ewes with twins in the region of £170-£198 with a few plainer outfits making less. Stronger lambs on Ewes and Hoggs definitely sold to a wider audience. Hoggs topped at £215 from JR Airey, Elslack. 42 Mule Hoggs with Singles avg £201. Texels with singles £212, £210.
