The leading gross price heifer on the day was a 615kg British Blue at £1676 or 272.5p/kg which came from S&NV Jowett of Queensbury and sold to Peter Pearson. Cull Cow Prices

The cast cow entry benefitted from improved numbers of cattle carrying finish and a particularly fast trade with Bank Holiday making no difference these days. Top call was £1369 for a Saler cow making 182.5p/kg from Townhead Farm Products Ltd who also sold a 48 month old, Limousin Stock Bull at 176.5p/kg or £1827 making replacement an attractive proposition as we approach Pedigree Native breed and Limousin sales this week and next week. Amongst the dairies a good run of meated Friesians ranged in price from 133.5p/kg to 159.5p/kg or £1276 for BH Wilson and Sons. The lean end saw a number of parlour worn cows 110p+ which looked a very good trade.

Prime Sheep

A very good entry of sheep today on Bank Holiday Monday with vendors arriving in their droves from a wide area. A tremendous entry of 267 Spring Lambs, nearly double the normal entry for the time of year, and 104p/kg dearer on average on the year. Hogg numbers were tighter on the week with nearly 1200 penned, handyweights a very sharp trade, mediums and heavies mixed depending on quality, 46kg to 51kg finding a nice enquiry for good level meated sorts, lean heavies a shade easier.
Hoggs required in large numbers next Monday (12th May) for end of Ramadan middle of next week. Speak to Ted for more details.

267 Spring Lambs.
The Monthly Prize Show was kindly judged by Andrew Atkinson with the Continental class winner from Chris Craven of York taking the championship rosette. The Pair of lambs weighed 35kg and made £160 per head, or the top price per kilo of 457p purchased on behalf of Yorkshire Halal Meat Wholesalers, Ossett. The same vendor-buyer combination accounted for the Reserve Champion pen at £165 (37kg 445.9p).
Yorkshire Halal took the next two highest kilo prices as well, 444p (38kg £169) from Mark Crabtree Kettlesing, and 425p (39kg £166) from J Fisher & Son, Goosnargh.
Messrs PB Fox & Son York took home 422p (40kg £169) which were purchased on behalf of J Penny & Son. Penny’s also had lambs at 420p (43kg £181) from KJ Marston, Otley, and 412p (41kg £169) from AP Fletcher, Heywood, Oldham who also sold lambs at 410p (40kg £164) to J&B Fitton. The same purchaser also had lambs at 409p or £180 from M Crabtree Kettlesing, and also the highest price per head on the day at £182 from Messr PB Fox & Son York.

Hoggs.
Trade more variable, with meat selling well, but lean sorts a mixed trade depending on weight.
Best Heavies saw Messrs EP&JM Hutchinson Faceby take top price honours at £184 selling 3 Texels at 57kg to Worsley Wholesale Butchers. Messrs Hutchinson sold 11 of the top 14 price pens inc £184 £182 £180(x2) and 7 more pens in the £170’s. SD Bennett of Silsden made £175, PN Garth of Addingham £171 and JT Rushton Elslack £171 all to Worsley Wholesale Butchers. Best heavies and Mediums were over 300p, whilst commercials were 270p/280p.
Mediums 45kg/50kg found a good following for well finished sorts and nice hill types, several runs of lowland lambs 300p/330p.
Handyweights late 30’s to early mid 40’s were a very good trade, best lowlands 330p to 360p, nice sorts 310p/330p, plainer sorts either side of 300p. Hill bred lambs had good Blackies around 300p, and a few best Swales/Mules could get to this price region if around 40/42kg and well fleshed, commercial hill types 250p/280p.
A large show of hoggs required next week please. Speak to Ted for more details.
