Prime Cattle (under 30 mos)

It was Monthly Show Day which facilitated a larger show of 27 retail type cattle this week, the headline figures showing 7 cattle make a hammer price of 300p or more, 2 cattle in the £1900s, 7 in the £1800s, Continental Steers averaged 290.4p and Continental Heifers averaged 296.6p.
The Champion beast on the day came from Messrs JT Baines of Gisburn, weighing 550kg at 330.5p and adding up to £1817.75 selling to Robertshaws Farmshop in Thornton Bradford who purchased 3 cattle in total.
Messrs R&E Cowperthwaite of Settle, first time vendors with Prime Cattle at this sale, brought forward 2 cattle, one a steer that was first prize and reserve champion, weighing 500kg it made 325.5p/kg or £1627.50 to Knavesmire Butchers of York. Their Heifer was 2nd prize in class, weighing 570kg, it also made 325.5pkg, grossing £1855.35 and selling to D&A Gregory of Bacup.
RT&J Critchley of Hutton Preston had a consignment that saw two over 300p, the first at 595kg 308.5p £1835.58 to R Pearson Wholesale Butchers of Bradford, and 550kg 306.5p £1685.75 to Robertshaws Farmshop. TH Mellin of Black Lane Ends had a super red heifer scaling 585kg 306.5p £1787.18 selling to D&A Gregory. The final beast at 300p was F&B Smith, Ingleton adding up to £1797.
Hargreaves Farms of Preston presented a trio of heavy steers grossing £1914 £1912 and £1846. Other cattle topside of £1800 included CD&RF Kitching of Threshfield at £1839 and £1808, and S&P Scrivin £1802.
A smaller show of geld cows this week, heavy angus reaching £1287 form Messrs Lawn of None Go Bye, and heavy dairies to £1048 from J Gooch Tow Top. Straight but lean dairies 80’s and 90’s, next grade 100 to 115p.

Prime Sheep

Another large show of Prime Sheep with 3133 lambs forward for sale, the average was up 12p/kg on the week to level at 244.3p across the board. 36kg to 45kg weight bracket (all breeds) averaged 245.43p or £103.75 per head, the 46kg to 52kg bracket saw 1132 head average 243.75p or £117.63, and 197 over 52kg averaged 242.52p and averaged a whopping £130.34.
The premium retail type lambs were a very strong trade today, with a pen at 400p, 32 pens at 300p or more, two pens at £170, 15 pens from £150 to £166 and 79 pens from £130 to £149. The range of weights at 300p or more was from 37kg to 53kg, if you have these retail type lambs to sell then bring them to Skipton.
Top of the shop at 400p was RH&MR Ireland of Whalley with their champion pen of 5 Beltex crosses weighing 41kg and making £164 per head selling to Knavesmire Butchers in York, whilst the same buyer also secured the two top price pens per head on the day with two lots at £170 each from JT Baines of Clitheroe.
Heavy lambs, both smart end and commercial were an extremely good trade, with buyers keen for weight this week, perkilo selling at similar prices to the handy weights.
Mules were 215p to 230p generally, with GW Houseman making 234p and J Harrison Thornton in Craven making 232p. A few pens of horned lambs topping at 223p.

Ewes trading similar with no difference in trade for most goods with some plainer swales and smaller swales slightly less money. 677 Ewes and Tups forward with top end continentals trading at £135+ but a shortage of the best end in. Heavies £120+ mediums full meat £110-£115 mediums ¾ and half meat £95-£105. Lean ewes £75-£85 and plain trading at realization from £40-£60. Best Swales trading very well with good meat £70-£86.50 mediums £40-£52 and lean £30-£38 whilst plain traded less in the £12-£28 range. Suffolks a nice trade with Heavies £120+ and mediums £105-£115. Heavy mules £100-£111.50 mediums full meat £90-£98 half meat ewes £78-£85 and plain ewes same again trading at realisation at the £40-£68 range. Cheviots sold to £97.50. Easy Cares sold to £82.50.

52 Rearing Calves to £455

Calves a strong trade once again with black and white less money and all other goods trading to the same and stronger prices. Angus bulls traded from £275-£328. Angus heifers £170-£232 Blue bulls sold at £400-£455 for good smart and strong goods. Mediums £340-£380 and smalls £265-£320. Blue heifers a stronger trade with some nice animals on offer. £370-£400 for best end, mediums £320-£240 and smalls £290-£310.
