Ralph Pearson made it a clean sweep of the leading prices at the May Primestock Show accounting for 3 £2000 plus entries from Hargreaves Farms of Walton le Dale, a British Blue cross steer weighing 695kg at £2047 (294.5p/kg) and two 695kg Limousin steers at £2012 at 289.5p/kg. Best gross heifer was a 605kg Limousin shown by RT&J Critchley&Sons of Hutton which sold to Pearsons for £1933 or 319.5p/kg. Top price per kg was 333.5p/kg or £1818 paid by Pearsons for the overall champion a 545kg British Blue Steer picked out by show judge Anthony Swales of Knavesmire Butchers consigned by F&B Smith from Masongill. A high quality entry with the bulk of the handy weight retail cattle 300p and above, best heavy Continental cattle 295p/kg and the rest 285p/kg or thereabouts.

Trade has brought more cows out with £1200 plus regularly for heavy cows and a top of £1466. Lean dairies a very good trade 135-140p. Coloured dairies always sell, the best a Fleckvieh at 186.5p/kg. A big entry of 60 feeding beef cows at Wednesday’s sale for any feeders reading this report.

A nice show of Lambs Hoggs and Ewes for the time of year. Lambs nearly trebling in number on the week and handyweights good to sell.
Hogg numbers tightening, again handyweights in good demand, nice heavies good to sell, commercial overweights a little harder work. Ewes and Rams were the trade of the day with buyers keen for numbers after the festival last weekend.
N/S LAMBS.
Joe and Trevor Stoney from Pateley Bridge took this months Prime Show Championship with a pair of Continentals that weighed 50kg and sold to Knavesmire Butchers of York. Messrs Stoney also presented an excellent single lamb at 42kg that sold outwith the show for todays leading prices of £208 or 495p/kg again to Knavesmire. Completing their excellent day, they also sold another lamb at £202, this time to A Atkinson.
Other quality lambs £160 to £180 or 370p plus, with other leading prices seeing PB Fox & Son of York make 429p (41kg £176) and 421p (38kg £160) and 415p (40kg £166). Craven Farms from York, and J Fisher & Son Goosnargh also made 415p.

Overweights forward in large numbers. £140 to £160 the range for smarter sorts, but commercials a bot harder to place today.
36kg to 45kg
Smart handy hoggs 300p to 340p, Tony Kiernan leading at 345p. Commercial handyweights 280p to 300p.
Mule, Horned and Hill Bred hoggs dearer on the week. Better Mules £4/£5 up. Good Horned Lambs also dearer. 49kg Rough Fell to £129 from EP&JM Hutchinson. Nice Horned Wethers 260p to 270p
EWES
Ewes were an animated trade today with a full line of buyers present to compete for the offering.
Best Continental and Suffolk heavy Ewes £170 to £200, just a couple of pens topside of £200 this week. Plenty of well fleshed ewes similar way bred £140 to £165, whilst a leaner nice selling ewe £120 to £140, with very little under £100.
Mules could make £130/£140 for heavier types, mediums £115 to £130 and lesser end of the half meat ewes £90 to £110. A handful of plainer sorts £70 to £90.
Hill ewes saw meated sorts a very good trade, a pen of 22 well fleshed Herdwicks made £127.50, Woodlands to £105, best Swales £95 to £115, medium horned ewes £70 to £95, straight plainer ewes £50 to £70, lower end £30 to £45.
Rams to £207.50, heavy Continental tups £140 to £160.
573 Ewes of all breeds averaged £116, 18 Rams averaged £129.

Rearing Calves to £239 Sales Every Monday at 10:30am
Calves sold to a good ringside of customers. Black and White bulls were a particularly good trade with a high percentage of ARLA calves in the entry. British Blues had a good following with most of the strong bulls £400 plus and a similar story for heifers. Strong Natives saw Angus Bulls circa £350 and heifers £300. Young Angus bulls £270 and heifers £150.

A great trade for Ewes with Lambs at Foot today, Mule Ewes correct with Twins generally £220 to £250 today, peaking at £260 for Twins from Richard Caton. Mathew Dibb of Dob Park, Otley sold Texel Ewes with Twins to £300. Singles were good to sell, with £145 to £180 for older ewes with singles, £200 to £230 for younger ewes with singles peaking at £270 for a nice Texel Ewe with Single lamb.
