Prime Sheep Sales Every Monday at 12:30pm
3385 Prime Sheep comprising 104 Prime Lambs, 2885 Hoggs & 392 Cast Ewes & Rams
A full and very busy market today with Bank Holiday making no effect on the entry levels with 5500 Prime, Feeding and Breeding sheep presented for sale. A shortage of handy and smarter hoggs made a good trade for these, whilst heavier goods were forward in large numbers, nice 46kg to 51kg getting away well, stylish over weights 55kg and above a nice trade, but a commercial type of Hogg was harder work.
Spring Lambs short of requirements and a good trade experienced throughout.
N/S LAMBS.
Messrs PB Fox & Son of York took the lead on prices today selling 42kg for £179 or 426p to A Atkinson, and 42kg at £164 to Worsley Wholesale Butchers. £162 was seen for lambs from Craven Farms again selling to Worsley Wholesale Butchers. Messrs Richmond of Goosnargh made £158 for Suffolks. The main of the other leading prices all in the £150’s.
O/S LAMBS
OVER 52kg
Best heavies £145 upwards to a top of £165 from EP&JM Hutchinson and also to £160 twice form H Raw of Eastburn. Plenty of other nice sorts in the mid £140s or more, next grade in the £130s for heavier sorts, and commercials weighing early 50’s in the £120’s.
46kg to 52kg
£140’s and £150’s for the best lambs in this range to today, to £165.50 form N&AD Boynton of Ripon. Nice 46kg to 47kg in good demand per kilo, but anything lacking finish or just commercial was harder work. Nearly 1600 hoggs out of the 2800 forward weighed above 46kg today and this is countrywide so its not surprising the trade for heavies is variable.
36kg to 45kg
Smart handy lambs 340p to a top of 415p from Messrs Atkinson & Son, Harorgate. A run of Beltex crosses form JG Burrow Hanlith 345p to 365p. Other Continental lambs depending on quality 290p to 340p. A lot of horned lambs dropping into this weight range today and selling well.
Mules a similar trade on the week, with some heavy Mules from PT&L Johnson Lincoln making £133.50 and £132 who also sold Cheviots to £139.
Cull Ewes sold well even with the festivals having taken place today. Buyers still came to fulfil orders with weight and style selling with plain & lean ewes still in high demand. Best ewes sold at £170-£217.50. Best bred medium Beltex ewes sold dearer on the week. £150-£170 for number 1 style mediums. Straight white-faced ewes £120-£135 lean ewes £100-£118 with plain end just shy of £100. Suffolk ewes sold to £217.50 from G&MA Lawn, Grassington. First cross Suffolk mediums £120-£132 with heavies £132-£145 and Best-bred ewes £150-£170. Heavy mule’s ewes £120-£131.50 with mediums £100-£110. Lean ewe’s half meat £85-£100. Few plain less. Swale ewes sold to £96.50 from KA&HL Fawcett, Barden. Full meat ewes £70-£96.50. Mediums £65-£75. Plain Horned ewes £34.50-£58. Chev X ewes sold to £147.50 from Craven Farms, Melbourne. Other Cheviot ewes £100-£115 full meat and weight £90-£100 for medium ewes full meat with lean Cheviot ewes £65-£87.50. BFL Ewes sold to £166.50.

A great entry of Breeding Sheep today for our May Day Show & Sale of Hoggs with Lambs and Geld Gimmer Hoggs. A full list of prize awards are below, and we thank Mr David Wood for carrying out the judging duties this year.

Swaledales sold to £135 from D Shirt of Edale and averaged £109, whilst the main of the Continental Hoggs sold from £140 to £160 peaking at £178 from HW Williams Llandovery.
Hoggs and lambs followed and the sale set off with a bang as Messrs Stapleton entered the sale ring first with their run of homebred Texel Hoggs and lambs taking 1st Prize and peaking at £320. Main of the best Continental hoggs and lambs £240/£300, nice goods £210 to £230, commercials under £200.
